Wrong diesel pump?

where did the return pipe go on the old system ?
 
Having to think from memory as too cold to venture out into the dark pits of my garage (in a block - no elec) but doesn't have one? Fuel Line up to pump and then up to filter, that's all.
Will have a good look tomorrow but where on tank does return go?, to see where it does go!
