I had the injector seals on my 02 TD5 changed about a month ago to solve problems I was having both starting my disco and keeping it running. Since then its been starting and running much better but there is a noticeable lack of low down power compared to when my problems started.

Matters came to a head yesterday when had to reverse back down a hill because my gas guzzling bus couldn’t drive up it in first gear - yer ok it was a pretty steep hill and I could have used the low range box but it wasn’t off road and it wasn’t the north face of the eiger.

It seems to go OK on the motorway and will get up to 90 (when I can afford it) but its really struggling with acceleration and doesn’t have the low down grunt you’d expect from a diesel landy until the turbo kicks in.

Anybody got any ideas what could be causing the lack of power? – I know its not the MAF as I swapped it with another one the other day, I’ve cleaned the MAP sensor and nothing is making any difference. I’ve been considering cleaning the intercooler as when I’ve looked inside the EGR valve/inlet manifold it looks pretty mucky (possibly due to the poor running when the injector seals were gone) but I find it hard to believe that it will solve the problem completely.

One possibility could be the fuel filer as I’ve been using injector cleaner which in told could dissolve some of the crud in the fuel tank and block the filter – ive checked the sediment trap a few times and there’s been nothing there…

Is there anything which could have been set wrong during the injector seal change which could have resulted in the loss of power?

Sounds pretty bad if it wouldn't go up in first.I have also had a lack of power problem but it may just be that mines an underpowered early auto 300 tdi[112bhp]Went up the steepest hill I know near where I live .Its about a mile long in peak district.Flat out second gear 30 mph.Half way up a range rover sport overtook me like I was standing still.Sounds like you need to check turbo and hoses clean intercooler ,clean inlet manifold new fuel filter air filter ,check exhaust ,blank e.g.r ,sedimentor ,clean fuel pump injectors.Change fuel filter first it only takes two mins then try it.

Danny,

Thanks for all the tips. When you say check the exhaust, do you check it for blockages??

Also do you think anything could have been put back worng during the injector seal replacement which might cause the problems im having??

Did the garage replace the injectors in the right order as each injector is coded to each cylinder. If placed in wrong cylinder engine will run but will be noticiby down on power with poor starting.

Jon, that thought had crossed my mind as well. I used a LR specialist so they should have been on top of it......but then it aint running right so who knows? Short of re-coding the injectors it there any other way to tell if they have been put back in the right order?? Would it show up as a fault code?

That sounds spot on with the injector coding, there is possibly another problem there and changing the injector seals has just compounded the fault. You definitely need to have the coding checked and if there is no difference do an engine compression test from the glow plug ports. Easiest way is to disable the injectors by pulling the harness plug. You can then rule that out and look for other issues. Are there any signs of the old favorite oil in the loom?

no, no sign of oil in the harness.....wish there was it would give me something easy to fix.......

The only way forward then, is to check coding and if no different do a compression test. It is the only sure way of ruling out the seals

Or you could do the simple thing first and check the fuel pressure,it should stay at 4 bar with the engine running, seen them gutless running at 1 bar just before the fuel pump dies.
