Solved it myself fortunately. But here were the symptoms (on a TD5 70K miles, 2" lift applied a few months/ thousand miles back)...
- About a week ago notice a faint knocking when moving.
- Over a few short journeys the noise got much louder. So much that as I arrrived at a garage to pick up my other car which was being fixed, the mechanics were stood outside staring like meercats.
- The knocking seemed to ease under breaking and acceleration.
- It was difficult to pinpoint the noise when driving - e.g. not sure if it was gearbox or corners
- There was no significant vibration in either the vehicle or through steering/brake pedal etc.
