I assume its for towing (trailer) or convoy lights as my s1 is ex-mod.

thought it would be rusted in but managed to get a big stilson on it and loosen it, looks like something electrical shoves in, unfortunately the four wires on the back have just been cut off so they go nowhere

thx, wish they had left it wired in, part of the vehicles mojo, wonder if there is a wiring diagram anywhere on the net so I can reconnect it

I'm not sure it'd be much use reconnecting it, from memory the old four pin military sockets will not wire up the trailer indicators, I think the pins are for rear lights, brake lights, convoy lights and earth but don't quote me on that.

yes, probably no point in reconnecting it, just a bit miffed as it is part of the vehicles history.

Yes ajb403 got it right,military socket and the thing on the left was stowage for the cap when in use.
