I have read your link to the tyre and wheel bible and fell asleep at the bottom of Page one - and carried out a comprehensive search....

i have a set of 4 16*7J 5 spokes spare, but want to fit 235/75 Tyres - there must be a relationship between wheel width and tyre width - but 235mm = 9 inches (or so).
How can I find out what size rims I need for 235 tyres (will the 7J rims be OK?)?

seariously i had 235/85 r16's on standards alloys, they can take up to about a 270ish tyre. 285's 8j's are reccommended.

235's will fit no problem. I found that the ones on my std Disco steelies scrubbed on full lock but the ones on my Modulars don't scrub. So offset is probably more important.

Don't think so. but a straight edge across the back of the rim & a tape measure will tell you what it is.
