worth it?

this caught my eye,
can't afford at mo, but a fair guide for next year or two?
Informed that an engine of this type just needs regular care.
what do you think?

Yeah, it's a TD. You can pick up a reasonable 200 for around that now.

Think pikey picked his up for about 600 or so - depends how much you're prepared to do to it i guess, although Ebay prices always seem to be absolutely top dollar irrespective of the condition clearly with the intention of making people buy not-very-good things coz they're shiney!

You could do worse than check out some of the ads on this (and other) forums.

Just an afterthought - you saw the Tango thread, that's only a few hundred quid more and seems really good, it's worth really waiting for the right one (and definitely get a 200 if you can, even if it's a retro-fitted one!)

Yeah, a 200 is a direct replacement, the 300 and onwards had a different gearbox. A 200 out of a disco has a chance of having had an easier life than a depender one, and the car will have given up the ghost when the engine has far fewer miles.

could probably have a 200tdi for £1,500 then, and some disco spares to flog.
