The title describes the symptoms!

The last few weeks the roads have been in crap state up here with hard packed ice/ snow etc so keeping the speed down has been paramount (and noticing any vibration impossible). Car was off the road for about ten days up to Christmas until the warranty co. decided to stump up for my new alternator and now the car is back on the road (less ice around) a vibration has started from underneath. Thought it might have been wheel balance or out of true tyre but no, the wobble is from below somewhere, possibly nearer the front and starts about 10mph. It lessens over 30-40mph but comes back once the speed drops. I am now thinking prop or UJ bearings. Sometimes and only sometimes there is a faint clang if I go from R to D (especially in low ratio which makes it worse).

Anyone with any thoughts? I previously had a prop shaft go on a Capri which went with a bang as the joint broke through the yoke of the shaft and all drive was lost. Are P38s prone to going this way too or is it likely to just get noisier?

Possibly front prop, or could it be viscous coupling on way out?> Smooth in straight line but will get rough as transmission winds up going round bends (check previous threads).
1, get your thick woolies on `an get under it. Try twisting shaking prop by hand: any slight click or play is a bad sign. Grease up nipples in both u./j.s and in slider on shaft. This may give some temporary cure.
2, if no luck take off front prop totally: this will eliminate front prop & VC from drive train. Narrows down possible faults, but a bit of work involved!

Don't think its the viscous unit as it does it in a straight line too at 10mph. The steering damper did cross my mind too. Will give that a go as well. Better look out the waterproof mat!

Had a look under. Everything is attached and on rotating the front prop there is a bit of lash, probably about 2mm. Would that just be taking up slack or should it be firm? The UJs aren't clicking at all so hopefully nothing should fall off! May need to admit defeat and take to local specialist (car still warranted so it has to be a garage fix anyway provided the bits are covered).

As it's still under a warranty I'd be taking back to source and getting them to check it over! Had issues with mine, (turns out needs new BeCM, which they should be doin this week, tho not related to your prob) but you never know ..... might save you a small fortune in time and money!

Have already spoken to them and are keen to get it in. Its always fine to have a look first though rather than find out it's a non warrantable item that I could do myself rather than pay someone else to do it while it's there. The way it's driving it'll need recovered though - not keen to drive it 25 miles with the wobble. (Recovery charges are warrantable too though but only if the main job is covered). Still, its better than a 2 ton ornament in the drive!

Had a look on a ramp today. Rear UJ on front prop shaft dislodged and looks like it's trying to climb out of the yoke. Evidence of previous repair by some know-nothing as there is an odd bolt in it. The whole thing has twisted around so much that the yoke on the shaft has contacted one of the mounting bolts. Now that places are back to normal(ish) next week then its warranty co. first thing Monday to see what they will stump up. Alternatively it's out with the 9/16 spanners.............
