Go on explain to a dummy the easiest way to wire my lights up to the ignition live - or point out why this is a stupid idea please.

Point being i keep leaving my lights on - obviously headlights go off with ignition but leaves the rear lights and sidelights lit.

My colleagues had a good laugh at me the other day when id left them on all day.....8hrs.

Last laugh to me as we all walked towards the car and they pointed out what i done.... Nanchauntly shrug - open door- lights aff turn the key. Roared into life.... But itd be nice to not have em stay on :)

Loop a bit of string to your key and when you get in put the loop over the light stalk. When you remove the key from the ignition the string is still over the stalk and your ember to switch it off.

Battery isolator switch?
I have fitted one to each of my LR's for the past 30-years, no chance of leaving lights on then.

The simplest way is to have a buzzer wired between the headlight connection from the switch and a pin switch on the door. That way, when you open the door with the headlights on the buzzer will go off as a reminder.

Slightly more complicated is to have a relay inline with the blue wire from the headlight switch, triggered by an ignition-switched circuit. This means that the headlights will go off when the key is turned off, leaving the front and rear marker lights lit.

Good suggestions pete how ever , its lready wired up from factory as per your second suggestion.

Its the marker lights i keep leaving on , the headlights already go off. Ok my marker lights are led and my batterys a near new optima red top so should be good for plenty time , id still like to not have this issue.

An isolators not a bad shout actually, just need to wire in a fused direct perminant 12 for my clock and radio.

In that case I'd go for a buzzer wired between the sidelight feed and a door switch to ground. You already have one switch for turning all the lights of, you just need a reminder to turn them off when you get out.

You need to retain the ability to keep the side lights on for parking on unlit roads etc.

How about a dynotape sticker that says "don't leave the lights on" on the dash? Given the low draw of the LED lights, you could probably leave them on for a month before it would affect the starting.

does it need to be there BY LAW or is it only so i can comply with the highway code when i park up.

I would comply by not leaving it on unlit roads....im a little precious about where i park it.....

I think it's just a highway code matter rather than legally having to have them. Personally I'd fit some sort of audible reminder that your lights are on- an isolator switch is all very well but then if you think to use that, surely you'd remember to switch the lights off? Looks neater too as you can just install it behind the dashboard somewhere.

easy fix.....

wire from side light circuit thru diode..... to warning light/ Buzzer..... to ign live.

When lights are on but ign is off then light/ buzzer will sound.
Diode stops ign from feeding lights.
when lights off, ign is dead.

Or for a more professional approach....
