Ok, the answer to this might be simpler than I'm thinking, but if it is I cant think of it so I know someone will have a stroke of genius!
I'm wiring in 2 voltage gauges to read each of my batteries, illumination and grounding them is no problem, however where can I wire the live feed from, it needs to go through a fused (5amp max) feed, that ideally (according to the instructions) is only live when the ignition is on, however the winch/aux battery fusebox is live all the time. I'm thinking run a dedicated feed from each battery through a 2 gang fuse box and to each gauge, but they would give a reading 24/7 then, I cant see this being a major problem with drainage etc??? Anyone give me a better solution, as I'm struggling to think of one :confused::confused:
Cheers

The main car battery could be fed from any Ign feed, go behind the radio for example and you can get your illumination feed aswell. The other battery could be run through an ignition fed relay so it`s only on when the Ign is.

Ah yeah the stereo is an easy onefor the main battery, good thinking! In terms of using a relay (which I have never got my head round) how would I wire that in??

Get hold of a 5 pin switching relay, couple of quid from Maplin, Halfods etc. Connect pin 87 to your battery, pin 30 to your volt metre, pin 85 to an ign feed and pin 86 to earth. The way it works is when the relay is energised by switching the Ign on, whatever is going into pin 87 will come out of pin 30, handy if you want to give something an earth instead of a feed, just put an earth on 87 and thats what comes out of 30 when the Ign is switched on.

when i wired mine up i put each guage thru a relay wired to each battery and switched with ignition..tis fairly easy to do

Reading the gauge instructions it says that a fuse should be run inline with the power feed, should this be done after the relay, or before??

Fuse as close to battery as possible. and definately before relay. just wire both direct to batteries. and wire relay from a ignition switched source (as already said) It gotta be the simplest wiring job possible. But if it's stressing you then You really should think about whether you should be messing with your vehicles electrics??

Redhand thats sorted then, I've re-wired pretty much my whole 90, but not as yet had to wire in a 'new' relay, just replaced tired ones, but hey we all learn with every new challange!

It'll be another tick in the box for Defender stuff done lol. Just put on paper all the advise and it's come together a treat! Thanks folks!
