hello
Most of my wires on my series 3 are ether broken or missing.
i was wondering how hard is it to make a harness and if anyone has a good design/layout of the chassis and engine harness that i could follow when making one.
cheers

This thread http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f16/service-manuals-parts-lists-90799.html will take you to the S3 parts list which has a reasonably good wiring layout, the wiring diagram is in the Haines (or LR) manual and its as simple a wiring job as you'll get. Looms aren't too hard to wire up but get lots of different colours and if you can't find the right colour for god's sake make notes on your wiring diagram!
Crimp spade connectors are the cheap way of doing it, but I'd be tempted to use solder bullets and joiners (doubles are available) where the diagram shows them. Use the old loom as a guide to lengths and make it up on the garage floor before fitting. Use self amalgamating tape or spiral wrap to keep it all neat and tidy. I had to make up a loom for the back end of my S3 a few years ago and it only took a couple of hours to make up and a bit extra to fit - including the trailer socket extension.
Good luck!

dont get lots of different colours - get lots of the correct colours!

dont use tape - but conduit if yu can justify the extra cost - stops it chafing and makes it more waterproof.

Do you mean convoluted sleeving? It's a pig to thread long lengths of cable through it and the cables can rattle around and chafe on each other. It's also a bit thick. Spiral wrap is my personal choice but tape is quicker and cheaper - that's why car manufacturers use it. Decent cable shouldn't have problems with water ingress - it's heat and light that do the damage. Yes, use the right colours if budget permits.
I'd love to see a vehicle wired with steel conduit! :D

Ah, right - know what you're talking about, Easier to break out of the loom using spiral wrap, though.
Either way you do it, it's my kind of fun!
