large brown from the battery goes on large connection with two small browns the second cable what colour is it and is the grey cable by chance a red/white cable 3

If its a brown it goes on the starter battery connection, its the cable that feeds the rest of the vehicle with power, the one with the spade terminal goes to the solenoid (looks like your starter has a built in solenoid).

5 wires on a starter is rare in all honisty but i might go like this

large battery cable goes to large solinoid feed terminal
small cable with push spade conecter would be from the start switch to solinoid
medeum sized wire with ring terminal from alternater that will go to the same place as the large battery cable
medeum cable may also feed the vehicle electrics so that also needs conecting to the battery wire
as for th 5th wire im not really sure put a ohm meter on it and see if its an earth lead or something

"Wow what a scorcher of a day", i'll come to that in a minute, it's ok it was my first post here as newbie and a lot of us had our heads stuck down the toilet on the first day at school! I would like to thank all for possible solutions to my problem, as I only have limited internet access I can only upload when I'm in town, so my photo will be following later. *I have been working on the landy in the wilderness with the first bit of advice I received from the forum, which admittedly my question was not explained in enough detail for anyone to have the slightest clue what I am going on about. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Well so far I have put the thick black cable from batterie onto the other terminal on solenoid, great no violent starks from batterie when connecting....all lights working blinkers functioning, horn interior lighting (how good does it get) now to try turning the old truck over waiting for the sound of a turning engine in my ears…Nope nout just a click and mixed with a strainge silence and smell of burning bagalite !!! F__k whipping round front of truck "trouble at mill" flames leaping out of engine bay, quickly ripping batterie cables off &*exstinguishing fire shaking like a leaf I am so happy the barn is still standing and the truck still intacked apart from a slightly coaky solenoid which I bet will still funtion when I get the wires on the wright terminals! * *So this is the problem (please wait for photo coming) 6 cables altogether. 3 push ons 1 is White/red that has it's very own pin. The 2 brown push ons have also there own pins. One of the brown cables has a 17amp fuse on it. The other brown cable goes up onto a little silver mounted thing on the bulk head under the centre of windscreen. Remaining are three cables all with rings for bolting on! 2 brown not so thick about the same thickness as the 3 push ons, the 1 thick one from batterie is causing the violent sparks when trying to connect batterie when mounted on terminal bottom right in pic, or starts fire when mounted to upper right terminal. :-/

Also if it makes any difference, it's a lhd with factory aircon and a Perkins diesel which was fitted at a later date. According to paper work it was produced with petrol engine, but the wiring looks original, thanks guys stay with me. :)

ring terminals are either earth wires or fasten to back of starter motor.

Hi redhand, back of starter has only 5 nuts on there, 2 long bolts to hold starter together, 2 short screws holding end cap containing carbon brushes etc, 1 lonely bolt not sure what it's for has little L shaped clamp! Maybe earth connection?

Hi mystery, White/red has it's own pushon pin that's ok. My problem is the fat black with ring for bolting on from batterie. And 2 smaller brown cables with rings for bolting on, I post a pic of solenoid later, thx

. Hi dr pepper, it has solenoid attached to top of starter motor I post a pic later so you can see, read action today with crossed wirers, nearly roast landy:-(

Hi pobby, I had serious trouble today you ever seen a landy on Bon fire night where the "guy" should be on the top on fire! I put a pic in later I can't upload right now, then one can see what's left of a solenoid that's caught fire, it still might work if I can get wires wright.

ooo fook!

the small single wire is the activator wire. the two larger contacts are a) from the battery and brown wires leading orf to other bits of kit and b) to the starter motor (and only that)..

judging by photo the starters trying to run as soon the battery is connected, the thick black cable I assume is going to the starter and the thick brown the main lead from the battery .
the single terminal is fed from the ignition switch as photo ,the three brown as photo are s to alternator,+ to alternator and feed to ignition switch as photo but the thick brown from battery should be on large terminal with the three browns

Nice one mystery thats very helpful, I have uploaded a pic with all cables involved, just connected without batterie. This conbination welded the jump leads to batterie so i quickly disconnected. Questtion 1 is the earth from batterie to motor block sufficient? Or should there be one from starter motor to chassis. Question 2 have I maybe included to many cables in conbination as this is originally a petrol turned Perkins diesel, just a long shot, novice you know:rolleyes:
I will try with just white/red ign connected and the fat black power from batterie to see if it turns.

earth lead from engine should be o/k the cable entering the starter motor should be on it's own large terminal the browns you should trace to find what the fourth brown feeds but should be with the battery feed cable on other large terminal.
the white/red should be on terminal as photo check the solenoid contacts are not welded on causing the starter to run as soon as battery is connected should be open till ignition turned
