wiper issue 1989 defender

Hi I trawled previous posts but could not find anything, but there probably is.Anyway i have an ex army 1989 110 defender and every now and again when I switch the wipers off they stay on, then after a wile they go off there is no pattern to this.I thought it might be a relay but I cant find one please help. thanks
