Going to sound pretty stupid, but I changed over the linkage and the motor and am putting the arms back on. Trouble is it looks as though I have to force the arms over the splines - nut tightens so far but then stops before the head of the mounting bolt shows through. I am worried if I keep tightening I might damage something. Are they designed to be forced down or do they need seating carefully first?

Think I may have answer - arm has grooves from splines on old lineage and looks like they were created when nut tightened. Unless I hear to contrary I will put some grease on spline and tap on before tightening nut.

Incidentally, I did read it can be a problem getting arms off in first place. I certainly struggled until I tried operating wipers without nuts in place. Looks like movement helped them work loose because they came off easily after a couple of swipes.

Ususally they are tight going on and coming off the vehicle, there is a little puller on eBay for pulling wiper arms off, so I'd imagine they'd be just as tight to get back on. Some arms, can't remember if this applies to freelanders or not, have a little slit in them that would run parallel to the splines, if your arms have this give it a little spread apart with a flat blade screwdriver. Don't use copperslip on the arms as IIRC they are ali, and copperslip kills ali.

ooh, that's handy advice - I was just about to use some. Thanks. Non copper grease ok though, presumably? Well I will look it up. Cheers.

its a splined slow taper joint ,same idea as a tack rod end,it will be hard to remove if arm and shaft arent worn

It was quite hard to get off but loosening the nuts then operating wipers did the trick. Useful to know that about track rod ends - thanks.
