I think my wiper stalk is faulty, this is my first Landy (1987 90) so I have no point of reference, but it seems a bit odd. I'm replacing the indicator stalk at the moment for a different fault, so it seems like a good time to replace the wiper stalk too if this is indeed also a fault with that stalk...

Basically, from "off", I can hold the stalk "down" (I can't click it down though) and I get a "normal" wipe speed. If I let go, it goes back to "off". if I click the stalk up 1 position, I get the same "normal" speed wipe, and if I click it up one more, I get a "fast" wipe.

Is this normal? I feel like there's an "intermittent/slow" speed missing? The "normal" speed is way to fast for light drizzle, etc.

Or is this just another amusing Landy design quirk?

All normal mate, the intermittent is a manual as and when you need it job. They only went auto when the 200 Defender came out.Yours would have had a 19j engine when new.

Cool, I did suspect that might be the case, but it's hard to tell with a landy - one minute you're marvelling in the genius of a design feature on it that seems way ahead of its time, and the next you find something that just doesn't seem like much though went into it at all lol.

You can convert it to have an intermittent wiper on it , all you need to do is upgrade the loom and add the relay autosparks do the loom there's a write up on lr4x4 on how to do it.
Cheers Ian

Oh, good to know....it is a little tiresome having to constantly turn the wipers on then off every 10 seconds or so cos the rain isn't hard enough for constant, and won't clear otherwise!

Yes I know all about the rain in Ireland I used to go to Ballyconnel in Caven 3 times a year spent many an hour on the Erne getting soaked then it was back to the pub and get wet on the inside with a few Guinness happy days:D. Anyway just to add to my previous post you also need to upgrade the wiper stalk to the later type.

If you have intermittent you can swap the std intermittent relay with one you can adjust the time between wipes on from a vw or something like that, I did mine years ago and theres a number 99 white on the side of the relay, quick google search will reveal all.

The conversion using the Autosparks loom is very straightforward to carry out, just plug & play.

I first did my 1986 90 many years ago but at the time they weren't making the loom and the genuine ones were no-longer available so I made my own (it was only a case of following the wiring diagram). Shortly afterwards Autosparks released their own version so I bought one if only to keep the wiring completely OE spec. I use the normal (non-adjustable) relay, never given me any problems and I find it works just fine with the timing being pretty good.

Agreed - I've now added this to my ever-growing to-do list as part of the restoration project.
