windscreen replacement

seems to be one thing after another with this after fixing my brake fluid sensor... i've had some **** tried to smash my windscreen while i've been out on xmas eve while it was sat on my driveway. Luckily not smashed but it's got a crack from the top to a few inches down on the passenger side.

I've only got third party insurance for it as fully comp was too expensive for my age... so they won't even want to know about windscreen replacement.

Whats the best you guys have ever had with this sort of stuff? anyone have any approx prices or best places to take it?

setting up security cameras on the driveway this week as well...

That can be repaired, I used to do it, they drill a small hole at the end of the crack and inject resin into it. If it only half disappears then they drill another hole futher up and inject more resin.
This goes in between the two pieces of glass, sets, and repairs. In most cases you cant see the repair and it's mot able.
used to cost 30 quid but you can get the repair kit yourself now and save someone else doing it for you, it's easy if you got the right kit and cheaper than a new screen.

After refitting the rear 1/4 glass on the hard top myself and seeing how my windscreen was replaced, its a doddle.

Remove your wipers and black valance at the base of the windscreen, you'll see where the glass has a 'trailing edge'
The internal trim comes off as well, just the side bits, not you dash or roof lining

They use Sealey products with a 90 degree stanley blade for slicing through the old sealant. neat little tool. It has flip out handles anorl for extra leverage in order to cut the old sealant

The main thing, after screen is removed is to scrape all the old sealant away.

LR do a kit.............. Betaseal, it has 2 types of primer plus the sealant, you prime the back of the windscreen and the windscreen frame, apply a smooth bead of sealant using a glue-gun.

I watched the guy do this, there was a triangular notch at the end of the nozzle.


It gave a 'pointed' bead for bedding down against the surface.

Then you flip the screen, get someone to hold the other side, with the wipers removed, just butt the thing up to the top then press down all around the edge, leave for 2 hrs

when I had my windscreen replaced the bill was about £400 , but fully comp so only had to pay £60 .

had to replace front screen on my bmw for its mot went to autoglass got quoted just under £400 got told to go to rac windscreens job done outside my door for £127

i've had the first option done so far, cost me £36 so that the crack won't get any worse, although with the type of crack it is, it's still visible but at least now i know it's not going to go all the way down if i hit a bad pothole or something.

Eventually i'll have the whole screen replaced but as it's just after crimbo moneys a tad tight!

I've got an rac windscreens locally in crewe so i'll see what they can quote me when the time comes.

Cheers for the info guys! N.I... i might have had a go myself if it was warm and summery outside but any work on me girl isn't appealing at this time of year lol. If i can find a cheap enough screen at a breakers, might be an option in the summer but i wouldn't want to risk it with an expensive new screen just incase i mess it up or smash it!

I know the feeling, its baltic outside, anyway got a garage full of Magners to finish off.

It might be difficult to get a 2nd screen, they tend to crack and break at the top corners when removed, the autoglass people who removed it (through insurance) brought their own hoover for the bits of glass lol

When I removed the rear windows of the hard top, I used a HD craft blade, once you cut through the bond, it helps if the bond is stretched, it cuts a lot easier under tension.

I've been making aquariums as a hobby for years, I can cut glass up to 10mm thick, you'll be amazed how much glass flexes, a windscreen is a doddle.

Im no longer covered by insurance for the windscreen, thats a 'how to' for another time
