So probably an easy question.
How do I stop the front windows from dropping down an inch or two every time I wind them up. Manual winder.

What is loose or worn out

The mechanisms are relatively simple to figure out but almost impossible to describe ...
Best option is to remove the doorcard and have a look.

You haven't said what year/model you have ?
This is for the S3, 2/300tdi and TD5
The cards are held in place with plastic clips, you have to remove the window winder, door handle and lock escutchion first and then wiggle it about and it will come off.
You will likely break some of the plastic clips.
You can get replacements on eBay (etc). There are different tuypes, get the card off and then order the bits to put it back on.
If the card hasn't been off before there is a plastic bag/seal that needs removing before you can get to the workings.
Once the card is off you can see exactly whats going on ....

Hi. It's a 1986. 90. Door card removal not a problem, they've been off several times before. I just didn't want to start poking at the mechanism with out knowing what I was doing. The handle position does not make any difference. It is bound to be a simple fix.

New window channels that grip the glass better would help. It may be the winder gear is worn an is rather slack given the age. Ones for early trucks are available for about £30.

Probably with the weight of the glass wanting to go down naturally and the winder teeth worn not offering resistance. Could stick new felt strip in the channels to act as a pinch point.

Not fully pointing down… you need a bit of pressure holding it up. ;)

To be fair after I posted my reply above I did go and have a look, and you are right the handle is not fully downwards, more like 4 of 8 oclock so there is some weight on the handle.
Must have been like that for 10 plus yrs now.
