Hi All
Recently got a disco 1 and itching to go play in the white stuff:D, but after reading threads on the dangers of leaving my beloved in "diff lock - hi" and potentially winding the gears up, I am little weary of going out to have some fun:(.
Can someone explain what winding the gears up is and how I can tell that this is happening and finally how to avoid this course:confused:.

Basicly when the props want to spin at different speeds due to cornering etc but are not allowed, they build up some tension which will eventually get so much somthing will go pop in your trans box.

If your on snow - fine in diff lock but you dont want to be going more than 20 yards on tarmac really to be on the safe side.
 
I tell mine that i couldn't be bothered to get the correct oil, so bunged anything in.. it gets a bit stroppy and sometimes takes a nudge to change ratios.

If you are likley to lose grip then put it in. SIMPLE weather its on tarmac grass ice whatever. if you think you are likley to loose traction OR do not wish to chance loosing traction put it in. Especially driving up icy roads other have failed. It only takes one wheel to loose grip and your another 2 tonne sledge heading backwards.

You will increase strain on transmission and risk wind up IF:

a you drive for many miles with high grip i.e hot dry tarmac.
b you fail to notice the light LR gave you to let you know its engaged while doing a, aswell as the "tightness" and rear wheel skip you will get if a Applies.

Don't be scared into not putting it in. if you have a knackared tranny box yes it may break if you do a but a servicable bullet proof LT230 is ok. Not putting it in when you should does more damage to centre diff, not putting it in may well lead to loss of control.

So much bull on ere its unbeeeeeelievable.

I'm not convinced you answer is without a dollop or two of bull and horse manure to be honest. :rolleyes:
 
You can engage and disengage difflock at any speed aslong as you are heading straight and are not spinning wheels. if you engage while turning a corner or indeed stuck spinning wheel(s) or accelerating hard spinning wheels you can break the box if you just head straight knock it in and out as you drive normally. Driving for instance onto an icy or snow covered road and then onto tarmac then just knock it out it may not disengage straight away. Its not the end of the world if not either. There is two things to try. If after a couple of bends it should unlock if not. You don't have to park the car up and call the aa dipite the people on here telling you it will explode and destroy your drivetrain. You can try putting one side i.e 2 wheels onto the verge and accelerate this usually works to unlock it if not pull over at a convenient spot and reverse on full lock it should unlock.

i known people drive 250 miles in diff lock on good roads without causing damage apart from some loss of rubber ,though they had noticed indicators that transmission was wound up at times ,your transmission would have to have a part or parts on the verge of failure for a few miles in difflock to be an issue
 
The mod constantly run in diff lock with no issues

Im not saying you should all the time but its not going to hurt once in a while
 
The reason for the warning was lots of farmers wives and people driving new motors around giving weird uneven tyre wear and eventually months sometimes years later exceessive wear/damage to transfer box/drivetrain

With the offroad tyres most of us run they will soon chirp skid and the whole feeling of tightness in the drivetrain when cornering is a dead giveaway that its locked.

Do you understand what a Diff does??? The operation of locking said centre diff with a Perm 4x4 drivetrain? Did I say weld the centre diff up???

Tata will probably make them 2 or 4 wheel drive selectable and sort out axle lockers as an option as everyone else thats taken over have failed to do so.

I have elsewhere on other threads to do with offroad only. In fact we do replace the centre diff in an LT230 with a solid shaft likewise with the older 2wd/4wd selectable boxes for comp motors only. For any road vehicle Er No!


I still dont know why they LR and other manufacturers havent got a VC centre, front and rear that would be a very smooth and nice on and offroad well in my head it sould be very nice. Maybe its been tried and isnt reliable, viable or as nice as it seems.

Nearest you'll get is borg warner and ashcroft atb's at the mo
