winches

I've been toying with fitting a winch and spotted these on ebay - anyone got any experience with em, or should I hold onto to my hard earned ?

looks alot like the tmax etc ones, could be good could be poor, if you are gonna be using it all the time don't skimp onqallity and go buy a superwinch or a warn, ifits for occasional use it should be ok as long as you keep it clean and greased up so the cable doesn't rust also if you go fording make sure you strip it down and clean it out with clean water as soon as poss as it will ruin the winch if you don't

Spend your money on a Tirfor. None of the concerns about leccie winches will apply, 100% reliable, not just stuck on the front, portable, and will have a good resale value if you ever decide to get rid.

I've been thinking of getting a winch, but I go almost every weekend to Salisbury plains and mud and water usually go over the bonnet...

Dont think a winch would last long by being under water and mud regularly?
dont know exactly how they work and if they are sealed, but with electrics involved I assume I would just ruin it?

Suppose a tirfor for me would be the best option right?

A Tirfor will last you years and are 100% reliable 100% of the time, we use them at work and are a super bit of kit.

yep the tirfor is good but as I'm a lazy git at heart ......

but have you seen the price of a tirfor.. now compared to a grand or so for a top brand leccy winch I agree go for the tirfor but that un seems like a good go to me for the odd recovery..

mind you i've never used a winch cos when I rescued Ratty from the ditch I did it with the disco..

How do the challenge guys manage their leccy winches then?

if your gonna get a winch save some beer tokens and go for a hydraulic one,don't waste ya money on usless bling electric stuff,ive had mine for years and it's never let me down and nor has the tirfor,there water proof and have minimal electrics,if you have power steering on ya motor you allready have a power supply for it albeit a little slow but if it's just for recovery that should'nt matter.

now i'm expecting a few arguments against them i.e.

if your engine die's you can't winch,but you cant with electric for long either nor can you constantly use an electric winch.

hydraulics!! tried and tested for centuries in one form or other

If they're competitive the vehicle and kit gets stripped, not necessarily to chassis etc, rebuilt and properly cleaned after every event ...

I was afraid of that. No short cuts to be had there then.
