I have a 110 Def with a winch bumper minus a winch, I'm looking at buying a winch to fill the void but really don't want to spend a fortune as the chances are ill hardly use it. So googling taught me there are winches cheap as chips but I don't want to buy complete rubbish. Anyone got experience of cheap winches, which are good which to avoid. Ta.

This might not be what you want to hear but I'd be tempted to sell the winch bumper and revert to standard rather than waste any money on a winch you will hardly use ( I'm interpreting "hardly ever" as " probably never but I can't completely discount it as a possibility", which is where I am!)

+1
I've lost count how many times I've been off roading or green laning and never yet needed a winch or seen anyone else use one. If I ever did find myself in the situation where I really needed one I think I'd want something better than an aldi special. If you really want one I'd keep an eye on eBay and get a good quality used one

Winchmax. ~£370 10,000lb, synth rope, wireless remotes, hook and fair lead.

Tbf I never thought id need one but over the past year ive found I couldnt have done withe one. £370 wont break the bank, comes fully loaded and a friend of mine has had one mounted for the past 3 years in medium/heavy use never serviced and still runs perfectly.

A winch can be used for more than just recovery. Depends what your doing. I'd love a mechanical capstan winch for logging. Use with a ground anchor and snatch pully you can scavenge logs. Other uses could be for loading low trailers, recovering launching trolleys etc. A capstan needs an oil cooler ideally if your using it static for extended periods. The lr optional extra catalogue of now unobtainable bolt ons also lists a rear mechanical PTO. I'd also love one of those. You can drive saw's and static machinery off them. Anyway I'd sell the bumper and fit a standard one

If you hardly use it, its not worth bothering as it will cease.. For a winch to keep working it needs to be used.
