hey. I want to get some recovery gear on my landy.

I have a defender 90 (1991) 200tdi. I am also a complete novice:rolleyes:

Firstly, if I want to tow someone where do I actually attach the tow rope on my landy? I dont use the bar/pin/ ball section do I? I noticed there are some eyes underneath the chasis, but because they are off centre would cause a problem when towing? Would I use the same section for pulling someone out of a ditch with the tow rope (or is this not advisable as would put to much strain on my landy?)

Secondly. I want to get a winch, because who gona rescue me when I get stuck!!! I go greenlaning sometimes and like to do anything thats not on a road really. But, want to have something on stand-by to save myself, maybe ill even get stuck on purpose so that I could then save myself. sounds fun!

I dont have tons of cash, but im one of them people who rather pay more and buy once, rather than have **** that cant handle the job, and end up just having to be replaced. I dont mind having second hand.

So a winch to save a landy 90 from ditches :);), and if I can use it to save other cars I pass by (prob will never happen).

I have read some stuff on here, and gather I will need to buy a new bumper. (just thinking, if I ended up front first in a ditch, then a front mounted winch would be useless, so do some people have rear mounted as well).

I am concerned about theft, are winches locked on or something to help reduce theft

Thanks guys!:D

Yes you do.

They are tie down eyes for when your landy is been transported on a trailer

Get a Tirfor.

They are bolted to the bumper. But have I suggested yu get a tirfor, yet?

Thanks guys!:D
Your welcome..

Firstly do not use the eyes bolted to one side of the chassis for any type of recovery as the are no where near strong enough i,ve seen enough of these things fail!
In their place you can fit jate rings which are a genuine part and are rated for recovery purposes.
Either 2 up front and 2 at the rear or just use a standard tow ball on the rear. Dont use the ones with the pin down through the ball as the ball is only welded to the jaw.
If you use jate rings its advisable to et hold of some rated shackles, the bigger the better and a rated recovery strop to go between the 2. some people just use lifting strops which are normally only rated to 2 tonnes.
There are many people supplying recovery equipment at good prices at the moment but beware of rubbish stuff too.
The main thing is your rope. An 8 meter 12 tonne nylon rope is probably the most popular and the most useful.
A kinetic rope is also handy if you cant get unstuck with a static rope. it uses the momentum of your vehicle and transfers it to the stuck vehicle.
A winch is a good investment if you go it alone a lot as with the right kit including tree strops, shackles and snatch blocks you should be able to get yourself out of almost anywhere.
Make sure you fully understand and are confident in what you are doing as a high percentage of incidents off road are related to some sort of recovery.
There are a few places I know that do winch courses which is always a good idea if you are that interested or go out with someone who knows what to do and can show you.
I have seen people trying to recover land rovers with small rope and they wonder why they keep breaking when they are rated to say 2.5 tonnes. They dont realise how much extra weight is created when a vehicle is stuck. especially up to its wheel arches in thick mud!!
