winch advice (contacts inside)

I now its not the best but it was already fitted when i bought my 90.

I am fitting a new set of brushes to the motor due to motor shorting out, corrosion and not working.

All stripped down and ready to rebuild after cleaning all parts, question is is that when i stripped it down there was a diode conected to the live side of the brushes but cant see where the other end should be conected to, hopefully the picture will load so you can see.

Any ideas ????

That looks like a capacitor rather than a diode, need a closer view to see what the markings are. if it is a cap then it will either go to earth or more likely the opposing brush to act as a suppressor. Hopefully someone with more winch gen will confirm

Numbers on it are-CL21 then 84J400V

Also found the main short fault -

Just need to find some insulation to recover????
