will an auto box from a 4.0 petrol work for a 2.5 diesel?

Its a BIG NO NO im afraid, both gearboxes are differant (ive tried), ring Emmotts of colne near skipton... £250 ish for a good diesel box... pm me if you want the number...

Sorry Tony but I think he's right yer know ... the 4.0 (HP22 box) is exactly the same as the 2.5 Diesel box the HP24 (from a 4.6 is bout 2 inches longer & DEFFO will not fit a Doosel!!)

I did say, I THINK. I was also under the impression that the torque converter is larger on the petrol engines. Must be wrong. Senility is a wonderful thing. I think.:D:D:D

it is also a slightly different valved box as well and a different bell housing and torque convertor

Think i was trying to say the 22 will fit the diesel the 24 won't. But still say the petrol engine has a stronger torque converter.

i rang them earlier and i got a blunt "NO" they wanted £1325 for a box delivered and would refund me £500 upon me retuning my old box delivered at my own expense at around another £100. i think thats a bit over the top

The torque converter is definately different between the petrol and diesel. If you can fit the diesel torque converter to the petrol box, and I can't see why not, then it should be OK. Need to check that the gear ratios are the same tho.

Then it looks like your into an experiment. If the box is the same 4HP22EH there must be a part number or designation number that changes the bell housing and torque convertor. I cannot see why you could not use the diesel bell housing and torque convetor on the 4.0 box. However the larger (i believe) torque convertor from the petrol may not fit inside the diesel bell housing. I honestly don't know time to either get a proper box from a diesel with all the same numbers as yours or bit the bullet.

According to RAVE the ratios are the same for all Diesel, 4.0 and 4.6. The only difference is the designation 4HP24EH for the 4.6. Funny old world ain't it? So according to that he should be able to swop bell housings and torque convertors and be ok. But who knows.

There you go, Wammers has found the last piece of the jigsaw, off you go and lets us know if it all went well (or not as the case may be):D
