Why won't my landy start???

After my Series with 200 lump in it had been parked up for nearly 6 months i turned the key on it a few weeks ago and it fired into life- started first time, instantly, great i thought - left it runnning up to temp for about 15 mins then powered down and did some more bits on it.

last week came to power it up again and all i got was the starter motor chugand my wires all get very hot. After some poking around i found the inlet stud on the starter solenoid was all loose, so, starer motor off, off to repairshop, brand new solenoid fitted, all back in again - go to start it again, exactly the same, jump leads smoking (descent thick leads) starter motor slightly chugging nothing more.

tried earthing directly to the starter motor - not that, so not an earth problem... so... any ideas?

One would assume (wrongly probably) that the elec place tested the starter after putting the new solenoid on it? and it started perfectly a few weeks earlier... Just a bit stumped...

chuck the battery on the charger - if your batterys fugged even jumping it wont happen

id always bump starting an old motor thats been stood for a while anyway (after hand cranking it to ensure its all free)

tried a 100% fully charged high capacity battery and still the same problem :/

yep but was it known good ?

ive had batterys in the past that unloaded show good charge - soon as you hit them with a load they go down the pub or something. and drop a volt or 2 without two turns of the engine.

have you bench tested the starter your self before you fitted it ?

the only other thing i would be looking at was the main earth strap to the chassis.

A duff bearing in the starter motor causing the armature to rub on the field coils caused just those symptoms on my tractor, even fecked the solenoid.

If your leads are getting hot then either you are drawing an excessive current through good condition leads or the leads themselves are in poor condition. Being as you have bypassed the earth lead and the fault is there and the solenoid had a loose terminal I would bee looking at the condition of the battery positive lead. Try bypassing it with a jump lead if you can.
Also check:
That the engine turns over by hand (not seized or coolant in the cylinders)
Its in neutral !
Substitute starter or check it on the bench with jump leads

like above, you can check wiring by discon + from starter.

jump lead + on bat to starter + then bridge the terms with a screw driver. obv out of gear and all that.
