why can't i select sport mode

The positioning setup of the lever is probably wrong. It should be set to position the lever in D when your in Drive which allows you to push it to the right to select sport mode. The lever position should be correct to the LED's to the right of the lever and the dash display.

hi, thanks for the reply... i have now had a look at the problem by removing the position indicator so i can see what is going on. when D is selected the lug is not lined up with the gap that it should fit into. when N is selected it lines up. can this be rectified by adjusting the cable? my fist thought is that will then mess up the gear selection

If the gear selector works ok then I would suggest that its the lug/hole that needs aligning when selector in drive position.
Hope you get it fixed, but when you do use that sport mode with care - like a nitros boost switch!

Sports mode on mine also doesn't work, fitted a Synergy and now goes like sh1t off a shovel so never needs sports mode.

Can you answer the following:
When you push the lever fully forwards and back one position, it should select reverse. If you do this your Freelander should move backwards. Does it?
If you move the lever back one position it will go into neutral. If you push the lever right it moves across to sport move? Now move the lever back to the left and keep in neutral.
If you now move the lever back one position it should select drive and your Freelander will move forward?
While doing all the above it should display the correct P, R, N or D character on the dash. If all this is correct then repositioning the lever will fix your problems. If you answer the above then I can tell you what need to be done.

Yep. It's more responsive in sport mode. If you put yer foot down when pulling away it auto selects sport mode and changes gears at higher revs. Dun't put sport on the dash though. If you ease back on the gas pedal in goes back to normal mode. I don't normally do it as more power = more repairs.

I often select Sport mode if I want to overtake someone but knock it back to D once I'm past.
Me too, but with gearstick and clutch and lots of unpleasant vibration, although overtaking in a Freelander is a rare thing. I had a Volvo estate back in the day - my first and last auto. That had a button you pressed so it held gears for longer, not sure it was called "Sport Mode" though

Check there's nothing clogging up the selector rod where it's held under the auto gearbox. If it's clogged up then this needs cleared first, then tested to see if the fault clears.
Strange fault this. Had mine out slightly but never by one whole position. I think this can be fixed by making an adjustment to the input lever under the gearbox. If it doesn't work it's easy to put it back. The hand lever moves the input lever under the gearbox. That controls a switch via a rod through the gearbox. Switch is on top. The switch contacts are wired to the auto gearbox computer and tell it what position the lever is in. From what I understand your hand lever is moving ok and controlling the gearbox, but needs to be adjusted a bit to allow you to select sport mode when in D.
With the car on the ground select park, switch the engine off and put the handbrake on. Also chock the wheels to stop it moving. Remove the guard under the engine (bolts at the front and rear of the metal guard to remove the whole guard and not the black plastic in the middle).
Now mark the selector rod which goes through the input lever bolt, so you know where the rod is positioned before the change (just in case you need to put it back later if this doesn't work). You could very slightly scratch the rod by the side of the bolt as a position indicator. You may find the input lever has been bashed somehow. If this is the case stop now.
Now undo the input lever nut and push the rod through it a bit towards the front of the car and tighten the nut. When tightening and loosening this nut it's best to hold the input lever at the same time.
You can now test what you've done. Turn on the electrics only on the ignition and move the hand lever back and forth to see what it's like. Keep repositioning the rod underneath the auto gearbox until the lever selects D on the dash whilst in drive. Also check all other potion options work ok. If not make another slight adjustment underneath and check again. Also make sure the hand lever slides into the middle of each position selection, and not on the edge of a position. Make sure it goes into park ok. If you hold the plastic around the hand lever you'll feel the click of the park option.
When the above is done and the input lever nut under the auto gearbox is tight (25Nm I think) you can then start the engine and check the brakes are ok (you'll need them if this doesn't work). Now test the hand lever position and see if gear selection is ok. You should feel the car select drive/reverse etc correctly. Don't change sharply from reverse to drive, instead move from reverse to neutral, pause, then neutral to drive. This is better for the auto. Try the sport mode. Also go from neutral to drive then sport, then to 1st then move to 4th, then to drive and then sport. You should be able to move to drive from both neutral and 4th and sport will line up ok.
If the above doesn't work then you can switch off and put the input lever rod back to the original marked position. If it's gone really bad and you can't get the hand lever back to the park position then try neutral instead. You can switch off the engine when in neutral or park. You need it in park to remove the key.
