on MOD/services defenders ? I've also noticed that on larger vehicles, they have a white circular plate mounted on a bracket under the back of the body of the vehicle, about the same size as a diff cover.

Is it to make the vehicle more visible to a following vehicle in pitch black ?

it is so they can all crash into/follow each other in the dark.

its true :D brother in law did it a few years ago in germany,6 went into a ditch before the chaos was called to an halt
:hysterically_laughi :hysterically_laughi

oh,an its so the convoy lite underneath as something to reflect the lite off

Thats correct. There is a small low wattage light known as a convoy light to iluminate the white diff or plate (depending on what that particular vehicle has). It is so when travelling in lights out convoy, the vehicle behind can follow the lit diff of the vehicle in front.

I wonder how the first vehicle in the convoy can see where it's going.
Don't follow me!!! I can't see where I'm going. :bump2:

infra red lites was fitted to sum motas:eek:

and with that stupid military switch ya cud run on just about any lite combination ya wanted to on the front

Cant tell you its a military secret:rulez: but i think its to do with carrots! The light is undeneath so it cant be spotted from the air, better a crash than a bomb:D

i always wnderd if this were bull**** , dads liteweight hasa infr red switch that makes it so u cant see he lights . this ex squady sed u need special glases , is it true ?

Hi all,

bit of an old thread but since I've just joined I thought i'd give you my answer to the above.

the diffs are white as said for convoy driving as white reflects well in IR and Visual spectrum, the idea was that with all lights off except the convoy light, this includes break lights.

The lead motor would have IR lamps on and his co-driver would use night vision goggles to guide the driver, the driver just used his normal vision.

This system is not used any more as the other side have access to night vision so can see your head lights.

There was also word that the right angle touches would be IR if you put the batteries in upside down, but I think that's a urban myth.

BTW will a NATO light switch pass an MOT as you could turn off your break lights, some soldiers may have done this if being tail gated, some civilians too I would have though.

i know stupid question but it had been on my mind for a while, i take it that it is allowed but can only be used off the public highway, a la chav neons etc.
