Why ar BFG tyres so well respected?

I am shortly in the market for 6 tyres.

265 x 65 x 17 BFG or prefered (265 x 70 x 17) All terrain.

I have heard that the side walls on the BFG are stronger than most.

What else sets the BFG apart from the rest, or are there other makers of all terrains that also have a good tyre construction.

I have heard reports of over landers driving from UK to Cape Town, and not having a single puncture with the BFG.

Thanks Yella, that's a fast response.

So in your opinion the Kumho's are also a good tyre.?

I really like the idea of stronger treads and side walls.

I am looking into buying 6 tyres, and as you mentioned, BFG are about the most expensive.

As an all terrain, which Kumho tyre would you suggest.

Thanks

Hi Stig,

Do you have any suggestions as to a decent tyre for say 80% tarmac, and the rest sand?

I have Dunlop Grand Trek AT20 on at the moment.
I have heard that these tyres were designed from the outset to be used by the Land Cruisers.

They are very good on the tarmac, and saying that, I would be looking at the side walls, as they do seem to have a degree of flex in them.

This of course does give the LC a fantastic smoothe ride on tarmac.

BFG AT's all the way, always used them and got loads of milage and the toughness is great.
Had them in the desert and on the road and if you shop around the prices are on par with any others of the same quality, i find you just need to keep an eye on the pressures and sometimes rotate them to maintain an even wear.

The bfg's I inherited with my 110 have got a few thou left in em yet but I'm starting to think about replacements. Given that I can get a remould with a very similar tread to a bfg and therefore similar performance Iwould have thought, will I get twice the mileage if I pay twice the price for bfg's?

It looks like the Kumho's and the BFG are the contenders.

As mentioned in previous posts, in this thread, the Kumohs could well be up to a third cheaper.

In the mileage stakes, are the Kumho's and BFG in the same ball park, as far as distance go's ?

I was looking at 6 tyres, that would give me 1 spare tyre, which I would also take with me, as 17 inch are, as far as I read, like "hens teeth" in many parts of Africa

Where would I start look to get some prices for these 2 types of tyres

Believe it or not, my last set were from Craddocks as they did a good price, took me by surprise too.
Also Southam Tyres can be good if you need 6 and they keep very large stocks, but depends where you are i suppose.
