I weren't sure but it was done like that on me maestro van never had a radio in a traccta before.

But purples my permanent live, won't that leave the light on all the time? I'll give it a go with the battery thanks sean, I know two of them work for sure.

Not the big thick fooker it's a thin wire. and will only be live when the dash lights are on.

Just had a look at me wiring harness Big purple should be auxillary feed and should go to fuse number 11 and be rated at 12amps

Fuse rating and colour wires are

1 8 amp Blue/red in Blue/pink out lh headlamp dip
2 8 amp Blue/red in Blue/black out rh headlamp dip
3 8 amp Blue in Blue/purple out Rear fog switch
4 8 amp Blue/white in Blue/orange out rh Mainbeam
5 8 amp Blue/white in Blue/slate out lh Manbeam
6 2.5amp Red in (loops to 7) Red/black Lh tail lh front sidelamp & numberplate lamp
7 2.5amp Red in Red/orange out RH tail & rh front sidelamp
8 10amp White/orange in Purple/green out Heater Motor & switch
9 12amp White in Green out 33ra relay split charge and hazard switch and reversing lamp switch
10 10amp White in Green out stop light and auxillary instrument connector.
11 12amp Brown in Purple out auxillary instrument connector & auxillary feed
12 17amp Brown in Purple out Hazard switch, and Cigar lighter

Wiring the speakers straight to earth on a more modern radio will at best reduce its power output massively, or more likley confuse the buggery out of/cook the amp in the unit. Strongly not advisable.

a defender and the only wiring issues you have are with the radio.you either got a good one or have lots more grief to come
