Hi guys, i don't know whether it's me looking out for stuff or whether it has always done it, haven't driven the landy for a couple of weeks so not sure.

My 90 200tdi defender sounds like it's whining at about 3000rpm then after that it's ok, i think it does it only in 3rd and 4th gear also without diff lock on and in high ratio, so normal driving conditions with regards to the gearbox.

Am I just being paranoid or should I be listening out for anything? What might it be if anything? Or do all landys whine to a certain extent? There are two sorts of whines as well, one which i can remember being there and one which I think has just appeared?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

mine whines when pulling away but settles down so it must be normal, either that or we both got problems

All Land Rovers 'whine' to an extent, it's just the resulting harmony of a multitude of gears winding away in the transmission. I have a 1986 90 with an LT77 gearbox mated to a 200TDi and it produces a very noticeable whine, particularly at lower revs in second and third gears. I've replaced the oils in my gearbox, transfer box and both axles today (as a matter of maintenance) and it hasn't made the slightest bit of difference. To check that it is just your gearbox, remove the middle seat cover and see if it suddenly becomes a whole lot more obvious. At the end of the day it's just a matter of putting up with it or improving your sound deadening in the cab. Personally I quite like to hear the gearbox whirr. Try driving an old series 1 and then tell me whether or not you think that your gearbox whine is bad! That said, my Dads new Polo has a distinctive gearbox whirring / whining sound too.

It's usually nothing to worry about, and is perfectly normal.

I have recently replaced all the oils in the landy apart from the axle oils cuz I couldnt get the plug out, so I don't think its low on oil. I have a cubby box in the centre where the seat usually goes so would be a nightmare to remove just to hear that. I think I'll just put up with it and hope it doesnt get any louder. I have been in an old series 2 and I know what you mean about them whining. Thanks for all the feedback. It has put my mind at rest a bit now.

No, but the oil may well have transformed into a lovely grey metal ridden sludge by now which will cause wear rather than preventing it. Unfortunately the axel drain plugs aren't magnetic, so any metal filings will be swimming around, getting stuck and grinding away at your diffs, rather than be drawn down and stuck to the bottom. Have you tried a big breaker bar on the plugs? Mine took some shifting the other day, I thought I was going to tear the diff pan off! For the sake of £12 for the oils (EP80/90) You'll have more than two plugs to remove if you need to fit a new differential ;)
