Hi guys my 300tdi has started whining over 2000rpm sounds like an excited owl under the bonnet, at first thought it was power steering pump but leaning towards turbo. Any ideas chaps?

do you have auxilury belt?
check the bearings on the idler or tensioner.

i had a chirping from the pas pump, it was leaking mind

not much to a turbo remove inlet (when cool and engine off) and you will see the spool. rotate it with your finger can you feel a smooth rotation or dose it feel rough?
in the center you can see the shaft gently move it up or down is ther any play in the shaft? (you may need to take off the turbo to do this)
do you have oil to the turbo? not sure how the oil feeds in this unit but inbetween the exaust side and inlet side you have an in take hose and an outlet hose this will tell you that you have oil in the turbo if you remove the outlet but it wont tell you if it is feeding at pressure.
hope this helps
baz

Ha haaa, :p

try investigateing the belt tensioner !!!!

What do you mean by this?

Mine has just started a whining from under the bonnet. We were thinking either something to do with the the aux belt or the alternator.

Deffo sounds like a mechanical whine, happens when idling so not a gear issue.

turbo on a 200 tdi starts spooling at 2000 so I would take the intake pipe off the turbo and have a look and see what oil is floating around, if its slightly black but no wet oil present thats normal and acceptable if it's wet with oil get your turbo sorted asap before it drinks the contents of the sump.
