Which workshop manual

Is the Haynes manual any different than the ones you see for sale on Ebay on CD?
If so,which is better? Is there more info on the CD or in the book?
I know if i buy the cd i can just browse the pages i want and print them off etc etc etc as and when, but when im away in the caravan i can read through the manual at the same time.
Help????

I've seen the cd-roms for sale on ebay but prefer to know that every greasy finger print in the manual was made by me and every damp page is from the odd tear or two! Don't fancy greasy finger prints over the keyboard!!!
I would also like to know about any extra info on the cd-rom if there is any.

Hi in short yes the Haynes is different from the copies on Ebay.

Firstly the Haynes is written for the sunday mechanic in mind it has nice pictures (Remember it's written on nice new test vehicles not 20 year old ones soaked in mud)

Secondly you don't need a computer with you and it's cheap.

The copies on Ebay are copies of in some cases the genuine manual most often or not either American or Saudi Vehicles which are different from our own. Secondly the are cheap CD's which will not tollerate a lot of use. If you're really lucky it will be an english manual, although for £30 you can get the real Land Rover manual from the likes of Paddocks/ Rimmer Bros and many other good LR specialists

Oh look in second hand book stores you find them there really cheap ie £5 which is how much i picked the genuine factory manual up for.

The disk covers the Disco 2 TD5, but also covers the defender which still had the 300tdi engine. Apart from a few parts being in different places it was a great help when I removed the water pump, it gives you the torque settings where the Haynes manual didn't.

Nearly forgot, check out this Russian site, most manuals are in English.

The CDs available on ebay are generally copies of the RAVE CD, as has been mentioned. They are far superior to Haynes and are the genuine LandRover worksop manuals on disk. They are in PDF format, each page being the same as a page on the genuine book.

There are pros and cons between printed copies of the genuine manuals and RAVE. I find it handier to have a worksop manual out with me rather than a lap top and struggling to see the information on screen - on the other hand you can print out just what you need which is useful when tracking an electrical fault as LandRover list diagrams, connection points, locations all in separate places in the manual/on disk.

I use RAVE. £5 for a CD that covers the Disco, Range Rover and Defender as opposed to £60 for each separate manual seems to be a bargain.

Hi ive got one of the ebay cd s its very good as soon as i got mine i copyed it so the original didnt get damaged, It is very informative on all things on every model but it it very poor when you want to see anything to do with a td5 engine.It has all the fluid quantities listed ect well worth £3 i would say lots of diagrams of mechanical bits to see ,whats £3 .cheers gazv70

well it cant be any worse than a haynes maual, i looked in the 200tdi ona and thought it was a pile of poo. haynes mauals used to be twice as thick and a lot more detailed maybe its just a sign of the times. eee thing aint what they used to be

that was when you could repair stuff , now its take the old one old and replace it . so you need less pages for that. they used to have a fault finding section for the like of yer ign. now all you get is how to check for a spark and if you don't got one take yer car to the main dealers.

I have both the Haynes manual and the Rave CD.......Both have their place and as been mentioned before the CD has a leaning towards the US export models. Just got to go with what you need at the time!

I bought the RAVE CD from eBay, not expecting much, but have to say that it is absolutely SUPERB!

Must have info for any LR owner. Having owned various Haynes manuals, I really don't like them at all, for some reason I always get confused with the instructions in them. The RAVE info (IMHO) makes maintenance on your LR pretty easy, the exploded view diagrams are excellent. There is also a lot more information on the electrical side of things, pin outs and data values for various ECU's. Personally I wouldn't say it was US biased - it does mention specifics for NAS models, but clearly seperates the differences (from the bits I have read anyway!)

Covers pretty much any "modern" LR - Defender / all Discos / all RR's / Freeloader - in one CD - you'd have to spend a fortune on Haynes to get anywhere near this amount of info.

Just buy one from someone with decent feedback, and check around as the prices vary quite a lot.

To prevent my CD being damaged, I copied the files on the CD to my hard drive and run it from there - it is quicker too! You can always print it it all out (have plenty of paper ready!!) and stick it in a ring-binder if you really want a full hard copy. Personally don't see the need, just print out the 1 or 2 pages you really need and take them to the car with you!

Iv'e got the rave cd copy from ebay, and it's fine. I copied the disk onto my hard drive and just print out the pages necessary.
It covers a variety of models including Discovery/Defender 200/ 300tdi and V8, a section on TD5 and freelander and even a section on the diagnostics and labour times for each operation. In short it was a fiver well spent.
