Which wading kit

Hi all,

Just ordered me Mantec snorkel:D

No way am I paying £70 for wading hoses:mad:

Can anyone recommed any of the current ebay kits? there seem to be several different approaches for the axle and box connections, i.e banjo, cut old pipe and push fit or remove existing and push fit new ones:confused:

Lets assume a cheap wading kit is not as good as the £70 one, and everytime you go swimming you get water in your diff oil and gearbox oil. How much money have you actually saved ?

I have the proppa (£70) ones and have never had to replace gearbox or diff oil after wading.
 
I'm afraid chaps that a 70 quid wading kit will do just as good a job as a pile of bits for about 15 quid.

Here's what you need for a good kit:

(I bought a 30 quid kit and then had to change/add loads to "improve" it :D)

5mtrs 8mm hose (fuel tank)
15mtrs 6mm hose (everything else)
4 x 90 degree 1/8bsp 6mm push fit fittings (axles and gearcases)
1 x 8mm straight push fit connector (to connect direct to existing fuel tank breather)
2x 6mm Push fit Y connector (connect axles together and gearcases together)

This will send 1x 8mm and 2x 6mm hoses up the snorkel.

I drilled my Southdown snorkel top with the right holes to neatly locate the hoses.

Find a guy called "parkindustrail" on eBay (notice NOT parkindustrial) he sells it all and is cheap and fast.

Trying to do the maths..

£70 Mantec Kit - £15 bits from ebay + (time is money * X hours dicking about) + 1 seized diff when the pipe fell out the push connector and it filled with water = ??? :D

Call me paranoid but I'd take the Mantec kit every time, because when you put a hot diff in cold water it cools causing a suction, and if anything is not 100%, it's letting water in. The mantec kit contains pipes that are bonded to threaded connectors that screw straight into the diff. Maybe the push connectors will be okay, but maybe after enough hours of hard driving, they won't :rolleyes:

Obviously that's just my opinion, I know lots of people have got water in their diffs, what setups were you using ? Or did you just forget the wading plugs :doh:
 
the mantec kits look like banjo bolts on their website.

the plastic pipe snaps before it could pull out of the push fit connector, and IMHO that is possible on a banjo too.

as a land rover noob, i thought about just re-piping me original banjos, but i was concerned that if a piping axle got dunked and it got a right suck on, i thought the little holes in the banjos might not flow enough air. i was much happier with the capability of the push fits.

my car gets beat up bad every time i go out (not always intentionally :( ) and tbh i sometimes expect a pipe ripped out, but no failures yet in around 20 days out, so im pretty happy with the kit i have made up (it also breathes the distributor)

Hi there, ive fitted a DIY wading kit like yourself using similar bits. But you state there is a fuel tank breather. Is this located onto the fuel filler tube, and in that case isnt the fuel cap prone to leaking in water?? Also, has anyone fitted a timing case breather also and is it neccessary??

I extended me own breathers using 3 x 2 into 1 pushfit connectors & a roll of tubing from ebay cost me about £20 and still got enough tubing & connectors to do 3 or 4 more kits.

Just my thoughts........

Pehaps bonding the push in connectors to the pipe once connected?.

and a quick check under the motor before a trip out.... you can see a pipe hangong off.

or checking the diff lube for colour from time to time.

Booger. The Push Fittings are designed to be used with compressed air lines. I doubt very much that a bit of negative pressure will make em pop,
 
The problem would more likely be a snapped hose in any case, I think this could happen on any kit, so I don't see the point of paying 70 quid for that possibility!

Also, the fuel tank has a breather hose aswell as the air return for the filler.

This is an 8mm nylon hose that is clipped up to the boot floor somewhere near the OSR spring.

Cut the looped end off and extend that too!

I agree redhand, I also play Paintball, on a regular basis, and own about 8 of my own Markers that operate about 150 PSI, and they use nylon pipe and push in fittings.

In over five years of playing I have never had a pipe be pulled off by accident, I have had pipes split, but that can happen with any pipe, but this comes back to mainatiance, and line replacement if seen.

Loads of useful ideas on this tread. cheers folk.

Now redhand has a point here, seems little discussed. Why not just extend the exsitng breather hoses as he suggests? They're all there already right? (except the timing plate cover) and no need to worry about changing the factory conections to axles and boxes?
