Which transfer box is this?

Would anyone know which car is the above transfer box is from? My mechanic says its a from a discovery and it fits bolt on to the R380 gearbox of a defender. It makes the car smoother and faster...

Is that true?

I think it's from a range rover, disco's have the LT230 box.

How can i be sure>? The mechanic said this box has chain in them instead of cogs...

The borg warner uses a viscous coupling to lock up , disco's never had them fitted, the lt 230 is the disco box , which is stronger and better off road, it would be a pointless conversion.

I agree entirely, but it might put his mind at rest. This is a pointless question if he dont have confidence in the answer tho.

Borg warner has a higher low range and is a viscious coupling no manual lock up it does it as and when it needs to (when they go wrong they lock up solid) better off fitting a higher range LT230 if you have a:

90 TDI then go 1.2 from a disco,
90 V8 then go for 1.2 from a disco or indeed the viscious coupling.
110 TDI then go 1.2 from a disco

All this is on 750 R16 tyres if you have larger then it needs more consideration. Jai

My mechanic was BSing? He said it makes shifting smoother and car will be faster... Thats not true... is it? He said there is a chain in it instead of gears..

Yes it does have a chain rather than gears.

Not sure what he was driving at (excuse the pun) with regard to 'shifting smoother' and making the car faster.

Given that your LR is a 'limited edition' of sorts then I'd stick with keeping it as original as possible.
