Hi all
I am thinking of buying an L322 range rover but can't decide on which is better for my needs. Petrol or diesel?
I have an sti impreza at the moment which does about 20 ish to the gallon, I also run an old 90 defender for day to day running about.
When I am off shore the wife runs the car most of the time so we do about 12000 mile a year in it.
We have a second child coming in December so would like a larger car for then but it could mean the mileage will increase as the defender is not so much good for the 4 of us.
Was also looking at the supercharged range rover.
Budget is around £12000

Buy whichever post 2006 model you can afford for the money - the quality greatly improved with the Ford rejig over the (so called) German engineering.

Ahem.. have you looked in the for sale section? Probably too cheap 4 U ...;)

I did see it and must say a very nice car and although i am not a lover of green i do like some cars with the darker green, however my partner hates green and said no way so unfortunately have to look else where. And its not to cheap, if i can find a car under 12k then great, thats just the max i can squeeze out of the piggy bank and after i sell the Subaru.
Also i was advised against buying any that had been gas converted, i was going to ask this question on another thread or in this one.
The person who advised against it used to be in charge of a Land Rover dealers workshop and said they have had loads of them back with problem after being gassed. I know its only one person who has said it, but he says he seen all the bad bits on them and there was plenty of them after gas.

Nothing wrong with gas on Rover & BMW V8's. The Jag V8's dont have the right valves for gas. If running costs are not a consideration then fine but dont discount LPG.
Bad press is down to dodgy installs & garages that dont know what they're talking about, which in most cases includes main dealers.

Please tell me more then, as i would love a V8.
yes running cost are to be considered but not hugely important as i have run an impreza for 2 years going through £70 worth of super unleaded every 200 miles.
If i could get a gas v8 that will run well i would jump at it:D

I'm no expert on L322's but the general consensus is that the BMW V8's run well on gas with no problems. SaintV8 on here has a 2003 vogue on LPG, I'm sure he'l be along soon to give better info than i can. The later Jag engines are more prone to Valve seat recession due to softer materials used. This can be helped with a Flashlube install.
General rule is that LPG runs around 15% less efficiency of unleaded so if your getting around 20 mpg on unleaded, your getting around 16-17 on LPG.
LPG round here is 66p / ltr. I have a 95 ltr tank that can fill to around 80 ltrs (you cant fill to full capacity to take into account expansion). Out of 80 ltrs (just over £50) i can get 300 miles on a good run.

A good quality sequential multipoint system professionally installed is a must. Mine hasn't put a foot wrong in the 19 months iv'e owned it.

My LPG L322 runs sweet. As said above the bad press on the Rover & BMW V8's about LpG conversions are from badly installed or maintained systems.

I return around 15.3mpg on gas from mine.

Certainly shouldn't discount them aslong as they are installed and carry a letter of registration to the LPG association from a registered installer.

As for your 12k budget.....plan to spend 8-9k on the car and keep 2-3k in yer bank for repairs and breakdowns.....

Never max the budget on a Range Rover, you'll need some left over.

+1 totally agree....

Thought it was sold?
Yip, i though so too:(:(, Shook on it, he even suggested doing immediate bank transfer as he'd brought his lap top, but it was getting dark and he had his wife waiting with 6 month old twin babies in the car?? We weren't sure how long it would take to show in my account so agreed on cash this morning. He phone me at 9am, said his wife wasn't sure, would i take £5500???? Pr**ck.

he comes from Keith, how ironic is that,' keith ' !! :censored:

Good advice from Saint as usual.

Great info guys thanks,
I had originally been looking at £8 to £9000 ones but then started stretching the budget as you do.
Is there a way of telling the difference between the BMW engine and the jag ones?

Where are you at myfirstl322?

If you're concerned about the cost of road tax then you can't afford a Range Rover.

Eh no your wrong. I grudge spending money on tax and feel that buying a car a year or 2 younger to have to spend nearly £500 for a bit of paper in the windscreen every year is a complete waste in my opinion, i dont really want to get into a debate about what I can or can't afford, I wish to ask other owners there experiences of running petrol or diesel, I think I said something about running cost are not so important but if it can be made cheaper by gas then that would be great.

Budget around £2K+ for a decent registered LPG conversion.

The Jag engine (post 2006) doesn't convert well to LPG due to valve seat regression....
