I have a disco 300tdi which I want to do a bit of off roading. nothing too demanding not really intrested in climbing huge rocks just lots of mud. The disco is also my everyday family car so what mods could i do to it to do the job off road and also stay practical on road? I have been told my the mrs not to break it or make it so the kids cant get in and out

yes it has side steps. my mrs is currently 38 weeks pregnant so needs the step to get in and out at mo. as soon as she drops im taking them off

Oh dear more sleepless nights! My two youngest (3 & 5 yrs) manage fine without the steps as does my wife who's only 5ft 4".

As Barmatt said you'll need tyres, General Grabbers AT2's or BFG AT's are good so long as you don't want to go through some serious mud (loads of threads on here about them), they don't affect road handling either. You'll need recovery point's front and rear (forged jate ring's on front and you could use the towbar at the rear if you have one fitted, if not then jate ring's), a couple of rated shackles (min 3.25T) and a decent tow rope 5 Ton rating or more.

You'll no doubt want to expand and mod the Disco when you see what toys other owners have :)

You don't need to do anything, but it will be a little limited off road as such.

So, sensible cheap mods are:

- remove front valence
- some decent recovery points at the front
- remove steps (not standard anyway?)
- decent set of tyres
- if your towbar hangs down at the back, unbolt the bit that hangs down.

The first two can easily be achieved by fitting a heavy duty front bumper.

I have a TD5 and have just cut the valance of that with a Hacksaw easy to do took about an hour then just painted sthe bits on show

after catching it when offroading as paul c says
steps do get in the way but I need them at the moment for when my elderly mum gets in the car she needs the step ,
the other bits i would say and gonna get are a Steering guard and diff guards

Same as everyone said above, make sure got spare tyre, jack and wheelbrace too.
Just before I sold my disco I took a lot of parts off it including a winch bumper so stuck a standard one on then cut the lower part off/trimmed the rear edges to clear the larger tyres- very easy to do :D
