hi guys been searching forum for hours now :doh: still cant make my mind up what oil i should use in my 98 discovery v8 auto i am looking to change transfer/diff oil auto gearbox and engine, was gonna just check and top up but might aswell change all, cheers, type and which makes (castrol etc) would be grateful
p.s so would quick replies as i wanna get started today cheers all

also is there any preference to makes of oil filters

If its high miles then chuck any old shiote in.Also with a 5000 mile due on oil it would be best to get the cheapest.Gearbox put in good quality gear oil along with transferbox and diffs as these dont change very often.I use castrol in all applications and magnatec highmile engine.....

it is choice on engine but ****e will do.

Trans box and diffs GL4 Ep80-90
Gearbox ATFdexron 2
Engine 10-40 normal or semi synth or the expensive 05-40 fully synth oil

Any of the oil companies have a search page and will tell you the name of their oil and grades to use

I dont have any pref on filters but Halfords is only three miles away so I use theirs.

so am i right in using MTF94 for transfer and diffs and ep90 for auto gearbox only ive read post where some are saying atf d11 or something like that
cheers

NO no no no no.

Autogearbox needs atf DexronIII - that's the grade not makers name, any make;
Transfer box and axles need EP 80-90 oil - any make;

Engine needs 10-40 oil semi-synth again any make.

In my opinion the maker is less important than the correct grade and changing the oils regularly. If you have lots of local suppliers and loads of choice go for what seems best value so long as it's the correct grade.

Where I live selection is limited, so I use Carrefour oils for the lot - and it works for me.

Good luck

Dave

As a general point any investment you make in your vehicle will pay dividends in more efficient running and greater reliability.

Down to specifics:

1. Engine oil & filter changes - I do them every 5,000mls

2. Fuel & air filter changes - the same

3. Gear & Trany box plus axles oil changes - every 10,000mls (although when I can get EP 80-90 cheaply I tend to do them every 5000)

I'm a diesel man so I don't know about dizzy caps etc but from what I've read, go the original equipment route on these, cheap copies seem to give problems.

But like I say, I'm only a diesel man.........................
