Which Head Gasket - 300TDi

Did this head gasket job on my '97 Tdi a few months back, I took a bit of good advice from some more experienced punters and fitted a "Victor Reinze" multi layer metal shim head gasket. particularly good, (allegedly), with a used head, available in all the various code thicknesses, maybe out of America, not sure, only $65 and readily available in Aust, not sure if they are available in the UK.
Also recommended was new set of head bolts, as the old ones may have reached their "cycle life" and can fail under tensioning.
My Disco is running really well now with no leakage of coolant or compression , I was a bit concerned originally as the old head had seriously overheated due to a heater core leak and when removed found head had .012" bow in centre, luckily a mate had a straight old one off a '95 Disco engine that had failed a bottom end a few years ago, just did the valves and "bobs yer uncle", perfect. Gaz:cool:

Thanks guys.

Gazbo, I will be replacing the head bolts, this is the third time I have removed the head and I do not know if the bolts have been used more than 4/5 times in total so for the sake of a few pounds I am getting new.

From what I understand the maximum warpage allowed on a head before it is scrap is 0.08mm. So once I get it tested I will know, just hope it's a lot less! :(

Ok. ...... Numpty question time.

What is "pressure testing" and how does a head get checked for "warp" ???

Ta

Not sure how they do the crack checks, but I think they use either a vacuum or pressure to check for internal cracking between the various galleys/oilways etc. Either that or they use Non-Destructive Testing checking using dye and 'magic' equipment! :) (Not exactly sure how it's done but I know they use it on aircraft structures etc.)

As far as the warp checking, this is from the maintenance manual:

it doesnt you fill head with air or water under pressure then check for water leaking out or if air soapy water and bubbles, though to be honest we found any cracks were usually visible or evidence was, .08 warpage is whats allowable as in just refitting,as lr didnt recommend skimming, its common to find them more so it is a skim or another head, most just fit thicker head gasket after skimming but you should check how near the valve is to head face as if its too close it can hit piston
