Hi all
Im thinking of building a challenge vehicle, north offroad which is the best engine box combination do you think?.
roger

200 or 300tdi - plenty of power to be released from within them, loads of torque to stop wheel spin. go for the r380 box as it does seem to be better than the lt77 for taking some hammer

Torque to STOP wheel spin  really
if an engine can be driven on its low down torque characteristics that then negates wheel spin - have you never wondered why the WRC rally cars have a massive torque figure but are limited to only 300bhp - they can shred there tyres through grip within 25km - not wheel spin that is induced by bhp

No i have never wondered why that is, there restricted via a turbo restrictor, the 300ps limit is due to the amount of air that can get through that restictor and this if i remember correctly was done for safety reasons.

Many thanks for your thoughts and views i was thinking 300 tdi, r380, diff lock front and rear axles with ashcroft internals does that sound better?.

Sounds good to me.

I like my lt77 for it's shift pattern, and for some strange reason I like the old clunky box, it's entertaining and it's the right box for the car.

But if I was building a challenger then it would be r380 all the way, it's just so much more driveable.

As for engine, how much water you wanting? Lots of trucks use the v8 for power, often auto aswell I think, obv the diesel won't **** you about if it gets wet.

I run a 3.5 that is so sealed up it runs very well in water, but it ain't perfect. A diesel ain't arsed wet or dry, but they're average for screaming up hills point to point.

Take advice on the challenge scene, see what the others are running.

I know a lad building a custom truck, 400 bhp 4.2 jag supercharged motor, bags of power and enough to run 3 hydraulic winches and move the car quick.

Cheers.

you are correct about the engine bhp being limited by the use of restrictors, which is why in conjunction with the tyre makers (Pirrelli and Michelin) they then found that by increasing the torque figure the tyres where gripping better than had ever happened in the group B era so the times on stages are quicker than in years gone past. Having spent the last 8 years as part of the Ford WRC test team I think I am qualified to pass comment that is fact.
also after increasing the low down torque of my 300tdi I am now able to climb up loose surface hills/tracks that before I was expeiriencing wheelspin in 2nd gear but am now able to climb the same hills/tracks in 3rd gear because of the increase in torque through less wheelspin.

I'm with ya.

Scream out of a corner in second = crazy spin.

Third = no spin.

You can actually hear rally cars almost bogging down when the revs are low through corners.

Lots of deep brum brum these days, less flat out screaming.

That said, if ps is limited, and torque is not, obv the engine builders will exploit that availability.
