I am looking at changing my van for a Discovery but am having a hard time deciding which one to get, engine wise.

I'm leaning towards a 99 or 2000 model as I prefer the forward facing seats and 3 point belts all round. I have 4 kids so it's quite important to me.

My major dilemma is diesel or petrol. I would love a V8, but have concerns about the economy, though an LPG conversion would obviously help that with the lower cost of fuel. Diesels seem to go for a bit more money.

Anyone got any advice, sensible or otherwise :D

Thanks,

Jon

All of the above really, if you are really committed to a Land Rover product. However, if you are really concerned about fuel economy then steer clear of any Land Rover. There's many a "people carrier" out there which will seat your family in more comfort and return greater fuel economy than any Landy. If you really want a Disco, then having had two Discos myself, I would say diesel every time, accept 26-28 mpg and watch out for rust!

Cheers for the advice. Diesel it is then.

I'm not too concerned with economy my van only does between 25-30 mpg but I do most of my miles on a motorbike(somewhere around 30,000 a year), and I want something to use for work when I don't feel like using the motorbike, and maybe have a bit of fun in on weekends with the kids. Especially with an off road track so close.

I had the same decision to make 6 years ago - Petrol or diesel. I eventually decided on the V8 - the price differential between the V8 and TD5 allowed me to have installed a quality LPG system with the overall price being approximately the same. In six years I haven't come close to regretting that decision. I get average 19 or 20 mpg ( LPG half price so price equivalent to 38 - 40 mpg). Much better performance than the TD5. Cheaper servicing. In the six years (70,000 miles) the car has been faultless and all I've spent is on service items and a few goodies. To me it has to be V8 - it's a no brainer

I prefer the forward facing seats....

Me too - I like to see where I'm driving when sitting behind the steering wheel! :D

I love V8s - as an engine in any vehicle, but my TD5 came up at the right time and price. With the de-cat pipe & straight through middle section she sounds like a rough Audi Quattro :) Still not an eight though as another LZ member quite rightly pointed out.

Diff.

Basically apart from a few enlightened souls, we're gonna recommend whatever it is we drive... I have a v8 so guess what I'd recommend.... that's mostly personal bias. The TD5 is a great engine from what I've seen and 5 pots although not an 8 are still very interesting. If you do a lot of towing the V8 on LPG actually works out a fair bit cheaper in my experience as the economy doesn't alter much even if you've got a few tonnes of trailer - try getting an equivalent 30mpg out of a diesel when towing...

Whatever engine you fancy, the more important thing with a 2000-ish Discovery is to get your self under the car, especially at the rear and have a good look at the chassis. the MPG will pale into insignificance if you end up scrapping it at the next MOT or paying the GDP of a small country to renew it because the rust has made the chassis terminal.
