Hi there, newbee here so please be gentle :p

Looking for Disco but really not sure which one to get, but do have some ideas.

Would like V8 one, Not too worried about mpg, will only do 5k a year max in it. Most likely look at doing a DIY LPG job, company in Wiltshire do a kit.

What I'm not sure about is the difference, or which is better, between a later disco 1 and the disco 2. I'm handy with the spanners and can wave a mig welding gun around, so ease of maintenance is good, but not having to maintain all the time is also good.

Been watching ebay and autotrader for the past month or so and prices seem to be all over the place, biggest price issue seems to be mileage rather than age. The later facelift disco 2 seem to hold a premium over earlier disco 2s.

So there you have it, pros and cons between later disco 1 and early disco 2 with a V8 lump under the bonnet.

Many thanks

Mark

It all depends on how deep your pocket is then. No ones is the same, I'd say go for earlier type their less problamatic & and any serious problems should have been sorted by now. The v8 is nice tho.

Hi
Looking to spend between £2k and £6k
Mostly towing caravan or trailer, a little off road, nothing serious though.
Some longer journeys, motorways with family etc
Won't be used for commuting, push bike for that!!

In that case I'd say td5, many on here will disagree, but that's my own opinion. They all have their own niggly problems, I got td5 & 200tdi both I absolutely love to death.

mate got a td5 disco its been a great car comfort, pulls caravan(got to check mirror to see if its still ther).Ive used it for the back and fore work had it nearly three years now and the suspention is the only prob i have had still got(note to self must fix) luv her to bits (dont tell the wife).

if youre good with a welder d1, nice and simple if your after the fancy stuff leather & electrics go d2

don't bother unless you like doing your own mechanics, have loads of time, energy ad money or your mad!

i got a td5 auto, bit more than your budget but not a bad motor

disco 1 is simpe to work on parts are cheap but can fall to bits with the old tin worm

disco 2 are alot better then is comes to rust(better not perfect) are alot nicer to drive on a long jurney if it has air suspension make towing nicer (mines not got air and is still ok better than works disco 1) but the parts are more expensive and they have ecus but i think haulkeye are ok with the V8 and td5 so i would include the cost of one of these in the price
if you go for a disco 1 or 2 the V8 engines dont last like diesels do the lower the milage the better

Hi Mark, for that sort of budget I would be going for a D5 auto V8 no question. The D2 is a noticeably more refined car without losing any of it's off-road prowess.

Go for the highest spec you can - an ES auto is a beautiful car and a great towcar. Go for one with air suspension as it gives a much smoother ride and tow.

Hi thanks for the replies.

Been looking around, at my budget there does not seem to be a great deal with less than a 100k on the clock.

How much life would a v8 have left in it? I guess servicing is the biggest issue, but at 10 years old I reckon that gets a bit slack with most non-entusiasts.

There are a fair few more td5 around mainy around the 100k-130k mark, would these have more of a life left in them?

To make up on the power stakes I was looking at these ecu re-maps/re-chips, there seems to more different types and companies than you can shake a stick at, plus a whole bunch on pirate-bay. Are there any good names or bad names to look out for? Also how well does it go down with the insurance companies?

cheers for now
Mark

D2 Td5 ES and go for a chip and intercooler upgrade, it'll go like a V8 but still give you 30mpg. Companies like Alisport for the intercooler and Td5 Alive are good and reliable.

Hi Mark, like has been said, I'd go for a Td5 then get it remapped, I'm getting mine done as soon as I can afford it, I've done loads of research and TD5 Alive has come out on top, so i'll be taking it there,

coming from someone who runs a d1 3.5 v8 on petrol, it makes my eyes water when i go green laning.

lets talk prices:

1 day pay and play, 50-70 quid.
1 hour road, 2 days green laning, 1 hour road home, 130-150 quid.
140 mile drive from manchester to abersoch, pootle around for a few days, drive home, 150-160 quid.

this is on 33" mud tyres, but you get the idea.

i say 'its ok cos i only use it once or twice a month' but even then i have to think "can i afford to go this weekend"

we have a car business nd i have done motorway trips in a couple of d2 v8 LPG, one 51 with a early install, one 04 with brand new LPG install. both were auto, both were fabulous.

i have also driven a 99T d2 TD5 auto with 150k and it was also very good! I can imagine that with a quality remap it would be a great great car.

iu love my 3.5 gcos its brutish and fun, but a 4.0 is a different beast - overheaty, liner slippy, problematic and complicated.

so, my advice is the diesel D2, for your usage.

cheers

Hi....i was really carefull, bought a lovely D2 V8 (the one in the avatar). The engine died after 10,000 miles (102,000) so i have had to have it re-built....and now the cats have failed.........buy a really nice D1 300tdi or the best D2 td5 you can find unless you can find a D2 V8 with without a gas conversion and very low miles, very cheap but in good nick......unless you don't mind spending lots on bits of V8!

Nick.
