according to Rimmers.........

Early differentials accept 10-spline halfshafts while later units accept 24-spline shafts. In addition, some rear differentials from March 1994 are fitted with a 3-bolt flange, which accepts the rubber coupling on the rear propshaft.
Please check your axle/VIN number and refer to the following list before ordering:

10 Spline Differentials
128S axles up to 28S44171
32S axles up to 32S9121

24 Spline Differentials - 4 bolt flange
28S44172 onwards
32S9122 onwards

24 Spline Differentials - 3 bolt flange
Certain models from VIN MA81992 (March 1994)

The serial number of the rear axle is stamped on the rear or top of the axle casing, on the left hand side (roughly in line with the axle breather).
Serial numbers comprise a 3-figure code, identifying the axle type, followed by the serial number and then a suffix letter (A, B, C etc.). The final drive ratio for all models is 3.54:1.

itll be 10 spline for sure. unless its been changed. you can tell by the drive flanges aswell. 24 rears are one piece and very flat. fronts are 2 piece with a short dust cap.

excellent, just the new i was hoping for. will mean i can put them in my series. Will i need to change the flange or will it literally just swap over

:( turns out it doesn't have 10 spline diffs, but 24 instead. guess they also fitted 24 splines to the very later 200tdi's.

yeah you did. Altho the VIN for the vehicle begins KA...which is BEFORE MA

oh thats for 3 bolt flange - meh either way tis not the one i want

THE MYSTERY CONTINUES

I actually decided to take the rear half shafts out, which have 10 splines on the ends, meaning the rear diff is 10 splined...what I need:D

But on the front, the drive flange has 24 splines?!

Does the flange end of the front half shaft have a different number of splines to the diff end? ie has got got 10 spliine both at the front and the back? or has someone in the past swapped axles / halfshafts, drive flanges and diffs for 24's?

I carnt be certain, but I thionk I read on here somewhere that the diff end are all 10 splines - its the hub end which varies. Others will know for certain.
