Which Defender to buy?

On the subject of choosing between a good n/a or a worn TDi, I'm not sure I could hack something that will only do 60 at the top. I might not go much faster than that most of the time, but I think I'd like something in reserve. For me, I don't think a subsequent engine swap is viable - don't have the equipment, space or inclination. Plus, wouldn't I end up spending the price of a decent TDi overall, especially if a garage is doing the swap for me?

mine only does 60 at tops i admit my tyres are huge but anything more than that just dont sound nice and running on full boost at like 65 thats a factory 200tdi running as it left the factory(defender 200tdi),as for the engine swap i think youd save money buying a n/a then even the day after put a tdi in it i think youd be quids in cus from what iv seen tdis are going for stupid money, just wait if you dont need one asap, best things come to those who wait for them:p

Its rock and a hard place...with the money you are talking you can either be very patient and wait til you see a 200tdi thats a bit of a bargain...or you have to decide now, a N/A with sound chassis/body but a bit lacking in power...or a 200tdi thats got a bit more grunt but is going to be tatty in other areas compared to the N/A...

TBH i always end up back with a N/A...i know the engine is bulletproof and a sound chassis/bulkhead are more of a priority for me...so i found a good one...now i'm saving pennies for the conversion lol :D You will never be 100% happy......

Aye, but how much for a known-good engine, delivered, and how much to pay a local garage (small independent Landy specialist) to fit it? If I'm about right in guessing around a grand, does the extra hassle stack up in terms of savings or getting an overall better Landy?

Am I right in thinking that n/a Defenders, apart from later MoD ones perhaps, are all older (pre-1990)? If so, why take an older chassis/body, which has probably done more miles, and put a newer engine in it? Would it not be better to just get something a bit newer with less miles on it?
