Which headlight bulbs are the best to get?
Upto now I've not found any that are that good for both distance and brightness, currently using supposed xenon from fleabay but even these seem dulled by the plastic lenses tried a few different ones with the same feel, not too fussed about hids with the cost and plastic lenses.
Any suggestions?

halfrauds +120s or similar from philips etc.

What Halfrauds at £50 a pair!! You have more money than sense dear fellow!! ;)
Ebay. search for Osram Knight breakers. Under £15 the pair delivered.
Thats all I've used for the past decade, easily twice as bright as standard halogen bulbs.

bogoff - £25 = or to me, trade. £17 :)

There is a maximum amount of light that a car headlight can provide on dip by law. Iirc it's 1350 candela. Any claim stating 100% brighter this or 120% brighter that, still has to comply with that light output limit. If they exceed the light output under test conditions, they will not get E approval and so be illegal to fit into a road car. There are variables that alter the test conditions from real world use however. Voltage is a good lighting bonus in the car headlight. Most car alternators provide around 14.4 volts but the bulbs are tested at something like 12.5 volts. This gives a useful boost in light output over the test conditions and I would guess becomes part of the claims of increased light output on these premium bulbs.

Tbh I think the main fault is the freebies pathetic headlight design too high and not enough angle with the load hight adjuster coupled with not plastic not 100% clear lenses..

I was in halfrauds yesterday and was tempted by the 130w rally bulbs that are strictly for off road use (of course!) but decided against them incase it melted my light. I massively improved them with some fine adjustment with the headlight aligner. There's a noticeable difference between within tolerance and set up just perfect. Bit like tracking really it pays to take the extra time.

130watt won't just melt the lenses, it may well melt the wiring too, they did on my last non LR vehicle.

I have been using 130/80w bulbs in my FL 1 for 12 months and have not had any problems with wiring, lenses or the MOT. In addition I have 2 Wipac driving (Spot) lamps with 130W bulbs which are controlled by the main beam circuit.
We have dark narrow twisty lanes where we live and the light output is excellent.
I had 130/80 bulbs fitted to my P38 for years, also without problems.

Er Indoors Vectra has self levelling HID's and 100W H7 main beam lamps. The HID's are crap compared to the FL.

I'd get some decent spots but without a nudge bar I think they look crummy on a freebie one, at the min I've got some small 55w in the lower grill.

I might have a go at chopping some in to the radiator grill at some point..

Personally I hate the look & design of the genuine LR "Frog eye" fog lamps.
I was looking for Driving (Spot) lamps which have a pencil beam as opposed to Fog lamps with their flat, spread beam. The light projection from the driving lamps is further than that from fog lamps and complements the main beam.
I purchased slimline design lamps and the mounting brackets specifically designed for the FL1 which sit above the bumper and are attached to the front bumper crossmember/crash bar.
