Which axle fits what defender? Backlash questions

Hello all fonts of Landy knowledge

I have had my 110 for 2 weeks now and am happy as a pig in s**te
Have done all the oils and filters and runs well...except I have backlash in the rear crown wheel I think.:confused: I read a post that advised to move the propshaft back and forth to test play ...i can do this, with about 2-3 cm play!..Can't hear it until I get to around 45mpg, but when I back off the gas I can hear a slightly worrying grinding/whinning/groaning sound from the rear axle. :( It only happens on 1/2 throttle and/or if I hold the clutch in.
Been looking at Ebay and plenty of axles availble to buy, however some say Disco 200/300TDI etc with disc brakes. My defender is a 93 110 200TDI.
What axle fits what? :confused: or are the crown wheel and diff etc all exchangable if I were to strip down? Can I exchange axle and upgrade to disc brakes etc? Many thanks, as always for comments and advise...
 
Your 110 will have a salisbury back axle. None of the axles off other landies, ie disco, 90 etc are a straight swap. They could be made to fit easily but many people advise against it due to the heavy duty salisbury being made for the heavy duty tasks a 110 might perform, and the rover axle not being as strong. Do a search there's plenty of debate about it on here somewhere.
 
no you will either have to re brg yours or find another 110 salisbury axle or diff which includes axle case,either drum or disc diff/case can have your wheel stations bolted on

If I change another salisbury with Discs not drums, it will be OK? no inbalance in breaking pressure from front to back?
Is it worth having mine reconditioned or trying a ebay £100 special first?

you could just fit disc axle with 2x new brake pipes be better than drums ,but you can also fit the either axle and swap hubs ,stub axle ,brakes etc from one to other,cost £250 to have yours reconitioned or £70 in parts do do your self , if you have drums at moment would be better to fit disc salisbury axle to yours straight fit apart from brake pipes

Can you point me in the direction of somebody/someplace who does recondioning in Yorkshire?
What year/model Disco rear salisbury axle would I need please for the 2nd option?
 
i fitted a disco 1 rear axle to my 200tdi 90.disk brakes improved the braking.:)
only problem was new rims needed spacers as the hubs are slightly different.(halfshaft nuts stick out).
