Which antifreeze should I use?

Hi all.
I won't bore you all again with my overheating problem, but I've run out of antifreeze and need to get some more. I've read various things suggesting that the wrong antifreeze could cause problems....

I'm guessing that if I go to my local LR dealership I'll be screwed on price..? (opinions welcome), but will get the right stuff....

So, if I'm going to the local motor factors / Halfords (!?) what should I be buying - is it as simple as pink or blue? Or is there more to it to look out for?

The car is a 2000 P38, 4.6 V8 petrol running on LPG.

Thanks in advance.

Is it as simple as 'if its pink its ok'? - Or is there such a thing as non-OAT pink? What does OAT stand for? Sorry if these are dumb questions...!

Delightfully, I've been using blue stuff for a couple of years.... I guess another flush is required! Does pink taste any better? - I always seem to get a mouthfull....

Different makers use, different colours. I don`t think there`s any standardisation, or recognised colour code.
Don`t use methanol based anti-freeze (if there`s any still out there!). This will evaporate out of the system.
Ethylene Glycol is the norm now. Check it`s labelled BS6580. It`s probably cheaper to buy full strength, and dilute it yourself as you`re not paying to transport water around. Follow the instructions on the label. Mix up some extra to put into the boot as a ready top-up.
If you`re draining out your system give it a good flush out. Running with just water may have caused electrolytic corrosion between the aluminium block/head & iron liners. Don`t take any chances with the cooling system on the V8.

How long can it be run on water to satisfy as needing to be flushed out?
I overheated a few weeks back and i lost a lot of coolant
I just toped up with water because im fitting a new rad this weekend

From previous posts I think Turtled was running with no antifreeze and therefore no corrosion inhibitor for a while; so I`d suggest he disconnects top and bottom hoses and bodges up a way of flushing the rad and block. Just use clean water to get out any muck that may be there. Good idea to remove thermostat first probably.
I didn`t mean to suggest running around with just water to clean it out.

Managed to get my OAT coolant from the local motor factors this morning. I was amused to see his blank face when I asked for it... he'd never heard it referred to like that before either (I felt a bit less dumb). A quick read of a label later.... it made reference to 'Organic Acid something or other'.... I figured that was the right stuff. £17 for 5 litres - does that sound ok? I got 10 (litres, not bottles) in anticipation of futre problems.... and sure enough, the car overheated on the way home! (I'll be adding to my overheating thread soon with an update).

Thanks for all the help.
Cheers.
Turtled.

Not tasted it yet

I forgot to ask something else.....!

If my overheating problem is down to some kind of blockage (causing poor circulation), is there any kind of 'dislodging fluid' I can use to clear the blockage?

if you've done all the checks ie rad,t/stat,w/pump,viscous fan after it boiled before, it maybe time to start looking for a new engine due to a cracked block.
