Noo.. dont panic! not going away from my dear landys!!!

with the first sprog due in August I'm looking into buying another vehicle...

Besides the 90, my misses has a convertible Golf and I have the citroen C5 "tip" ( basically use her to commute to work and its my "dont give a ****" car)

So.... I've been looking to get a more like family car...as I'll be selling the misses Golf. A convertible is not an option with a massive push chair to fit in the boot..

the missus wants a Cammo defender, but I think its just not an option as the budget wont stretch to get a newer defender, and I already have the 90 that gives me enough to keep busy!

So dont want to go and buy a 110, that would have to be older and therefore more prone to problems.....

When I say family car... not really as I dont want a car, I want a 4x4, something big :D

First looked at getting a Range Rover Vogue, but gone off that idea...

So....and please dont shoot me for sugesting these, but dont think another LR is going to be an option...

I was thinking of something along the lines of a Nissan Navara, X-trail? something like that? a kind of pick up truck thingy?

does anyone have any ideas of something decent along that type?

cheers
JP

lwb shogun/pajero. loads of room and reliable.
the pajero has more whistles and bells than a shogun so it depends on how much bling ya need.

I'd go for a Disco.
Easy to repair blah, blah, blah you know the rest.
That's the way I've got & the only way as far as I can see.

If your referring to the new shape Navara, its absolutely terrible. My uncle is on his second turbo and 3rd rear diff. If you want any more confirmation, check out the yahoo reviews on it. Many blame Renault's involvement in its design for its associated problems, so I'd be careful and research the X-Trail a bit before thinking about that (I know nothing about the car, it might be good!).

If your after a pickup, it has to be a Hilux. Quite a bit more expensive to buy than its rivals, but infinitely better. Alternatively, an L200 (the previous model to the current raging bull) with the 2.8TD engine is really good, but rare.

I agree with George though, go for a disco, the support community on here is fantastic, cheap parts, etc etc!

Billboard near me has ad for a new VW pick up, on the lines of the l200. Looks quite smart.

boot on a disco isn't actually very big!!! the boot on my frontera is fecking huge and i can easily fit 2 dog cages in there:eek: now i wouldn't suggest a frontera cos it's a vauxhall lol:eek: not sure if one of those double cab trucks would be good as they are quite high and lifting half a ton of baby gear into the back might get tiresome for your missus.
whatever you do choose just make sure you have 5 doors, that way you don't have to be a contortionist to get the babyseat and baby into the back seat;)

easy !!! My nissan patrol .........4.2 lwb LPG converted ..:D

have you seen the leg room in the back of the navara (more to the point lack of).
gardening contractor i know had 1 he said he could'nt wait for the lease contract to finish so he could go back to a 110 double cab, said it was fine on a motorway hammering up the road, but round town and towing was total shyte (and the max tow wieght is 2.5 tonne and it strugles with that!)

have had 3 xtrails and all were good although the petrol was underpowerd imho

now have a mitsubishi outlander warrior edition

7 seats mahoosive boot with fold down lower tailgate section aswell as upper section makes putting larg stuff in the boot easy

rear seats move forwards and backwards for bigger boot or more rear legroom

have to say it is a nice motor..£18k just under a year ago

Hi, I'm wondering why you went off the Range Rover idea?

May be that your first thought was the best.
I know I love my Rangies, you can't get a better 'suitable for everything'
car IMHO.
Certainly great for space, shopping, big boot etc.
I have run rangies on LPG for years with no problems caused by the LPG
that I am aware of.
Looked after, they are reliable and most importantly - cheap to buy 2nd hand.
Get one with LPG already fitted and save loads of money. :D:D

There's plenty to choose from out there, and loads of help on here if needed.
I will be bereft if the day ever comes when there isn't a Range Rover on my drive. :(

Thanks for all the replies!!!

lets see if I can reply to all of it....

Disco - Have had one, dont want one again, despite having the option of a disco 2 or 3.. when I look at it, its still a disco

Navara - Thanks for the feedback, that's the kind of stuff I was waiting to hear,so I'll stay clear of that

WLM - thanks for that, didnt think of those, a bit too much over my budget though!

Why not the RR - Well, I must have been Scottish in another life, always wanted a RR, the L322, so I started saving money for one, got to about 11k and now I cant part with the money! lol just cant bring myself to spend so much money on a car..altough I still love it, I think to buy one, I would have to have double the money I would pay for one...

I'm looking at spending around 6k or something on the new motor...not sure, as I said I have 11k available, so depends on what comes along...

Also, might be replacing the C5 end of August for something like a Merc Vito, so I can have the seat space, but when needed I can get the seats out and put the track bikes in there...

too many things happening at the same time! lol

but thanks for the feedback, I shall go on eBay now and look at some motors!

Get a Disco - you know it makes sense. My Disco II can almost go anywhere where my 110 hardtop can go, with the right tyres on. Disco 3 and 4 are lovely, lovely motors, not cheap though.

You know in your heart you don't want something from the Land of the Rising sun. You want good, robust, cantankerous, unreliable British Engineering.

I had a Nissan Patrol once - a tank. Low tech compared to the Disco but good engine and a proper 4x4.

I'd love to see you taking a Vito off road. Make sure you're not at a risk of heart attack when you try to get it serviced - van space, s-class servicing costs.

If it's gotta be a merc, then G-Wagen, not for 11K though.

101 Forward control?

eerrmmm.. I'm not taking it off road though.

The only thing that goes off roading is the 90 :D

I just want a second 4x4 / big car, doesnt need to be good off road or off road capable.. (this doesnt mean the gaylander is an option though! lol)

quite like the look of the L200 or the Navara, but sadly the reviews on the Navara are not good... but are these refering only to newer models? or older models will be ok?

fokin pain having to choose a car!

Navara body becomes unstable in crash and can demount-there is also a site knackered navara outlining how **** they are

E class estate.
The xtrail is ok, bit plasticy in side, the dezuls aint brilliant-bloody french injuns.Goes alright when it working though.
