where's your fuel tank?

My 71 LWT (in the avatar) has a chassis conversion from '85 RRC..... before I bought it, it used to be a pick up and had the radiator and 10 gallon alloy fuel cell in the back. The radiator was moved back to up front and when I bought it, the tank was and still is in the back

with it being a RRC chassis, wonder if there are other LWT owners who could share photos & suggestions of where their fuel tanks are? with it being a LWT, do they still fit under the seat as per original LWT design or do they fit on chassis as per RRC design?

the 10 gallon alloy fuel tank is "ok" but takes up space in already small rear tub, plus when I want to start green laning this year, want a bigger range than 10 gallon (v8 = thirsty and short range on a tank). Looked at getting a larger fuel cell for the rear tub but not too sure now

and for those who still reading this..... Im interested in putting rock sliders on, but same questions appear for RRC chassis with LWT body, or am I just getting some box steel and welding some up myself? how do the rock sliders actually fit to the chassis on any land rover?

under the seat is where the fuel tank would normally be located, the 109's had theirs under the tub between the chassis rails and also some had then under the seat as well,

you need to weld brackets to take the tanks on chassis sides,as for rock sliders it depends on what was done to the chassis

Assuming your Air Portable is still 88" wheelbase. There probably isn't sufficient room to mount a standard tank in the standard location under the seats. The outriggers and radius/trailing arm mounts will be in the way. Giving less space than a leaf sprung original. Hence why the tank is in the bed.

You could get a custom tank to fit the space along with some custom mounts under the seat. But would likely result in a smaller tank.

As for capacity. A standard Series tank is only circa 10 gallons/45 litres anyhow. The only way to extend range was a 2nd tank under the passenger seat.

Basically your only options will be stick with what you have. Or a custom setup.

As for green laning. I can believe the tank takes up too much room, unless you will be having more than 2 people in the vehicle. As for range. Where do you think you will be driving? 3 weekends ago I was on a 4 day laning trip in mid Wales one of the group was in a V8 80" Series 1 and had no issues with range. There are plenty of petrol stations about. Just take a 5 gallon Jerry can with you. Either strapped in the bed or you can get holders for them. And keep it as a reserve.

As for rock sliders. You'll need something custom. Range Rover ones will be a foot too long as they are for 100" wheelbase. You might be able to cut them down. Depends how yours has been built and fabricated.

cheer for all advice, looks like I'll stick with the 10gallon tank in the tub for now and get a bracket made up to hold a jerry can I got lying around.

Rock sliders, will visit local metal fabricator to see what can be knocked up using box steel sections

My lightweight with galvy coil sprung chassis has it fuel tank in the back as you would need to modify a standard tank to get round the trailing arm brackets

Ive always planned to see about fitting a 109 / defender maybe even disco rear mounted tank at the back between chassis rails ,i assume the chassis rails are all the same distance apart ?

Chassis rail separation distance is the same. However the distance available in length from the rear crossmember to the central brace may well limit space. And is shorter than you get in 90. Remember a90 has a 92.9" wheelbase vs 88" for a Series. So if yours is cutdown to 88" that is a fair chunk less space.

Also the chassis profile may be different, depending on if it's a Disco/RR chassis or something else. The arc over the rear wheels is not identical to a Series or a Defender chassis.

Best way would be to get hold of your chosen tank (even an old one on its way to the scrap) and see if it would fit that way ,my rear chassis legs are straight unlike disco / rrc chassis legs so i suspect a disco tank may hang down too far and a disco being 100" may be a problem

Depends what you want to put in the back as my fuel tank only eats up a foot of space

My petrol tank is in the back of my Merc. Mulberry is happily running on LPG at the mo so I'm waiting for half tidy weather to fit the new tank.
