Where's my air filter?

Yes it does sound like a stupid question !
I have a safari snorkel fitted, i assume there would be an air filter but either i'm blind or there aint one!!! Should there be? and if so where?

Yes there should be inline with the snorkel, perhaps when the the snorkel was fitted the air filter was left off and not fitted, although there may be a filter at the highest point of the snorkel ie. the top

The Safari snorkel uses a modified, but otherwise standard airbox and air filter .. Safari provide a plastic section that you have to glue onto the airbox so you can use the standard air filter. If there isn't a standard airbox then someone's bought a snorkel cheap and bodged it together, unless there's another air filter somewhere in the system. Only you can find it, but start at the top of the snorkel and work your way to the engine ...

Had already checked under the bonnet, I've had a look at the top and i AIN'T GOT ONE !!!!! BUGGER !!!!!

Bear in mind that that's a 200 Tdi ... a 300 Tdi has a square box in roughly the same place, four clips hold the top on. The Safari on a 300 Tdi enters in front of the airbox and enters the airbox at the engine side, low down. The air filter is just under the airbox top.

did you take all the rust off the inner wing before you took the pic, are you gonna put it back on after

Very little rust, seems to have been looked after, the boot floor looks like new, got a few faults but so far nothing to serious

Yup ... that's a Safari for a 200 Tdi, it's shorter and comes into the engine compartment 'earlier' than a 300 version. Then instead of actually plumbing it in properly, someone's just bolted it to the air inlet .. nice .. you have no air filtration unless they've also cobbled something within the snorkel .. !!

The U-bend with the mini bellows is the standard 300 air inlet bend that normally has a flange (looks like it's been cut off) that clips into the inner wing further forwards, in front of where the normal air filter would be, beside the Jack mount.

I'd suggest you get some form of air filter ... pdq ...

i seem to have to slot something in there, does it matter how big it is or can i find the cheapest filter and work from there?

They don't come off - just unscrew as normal.

Can't see why not .. and owt's better than nowt .. so long as it doesn't restrict airflow too much. I'd just go as large as possible in the space you have ..

TBH, I'd look at an enclosed in-line filter like some racing boys have. In fact it's quite an elegant way of doing it! Making me re-think how I'm going to do mine ..

i'd start checking around the rest of the disco for the last owners 'MODIFING'

i'd just go on the bay of flea and search universal air filter, the G boy type

and remove the top of ya snorkle and bolt it up there
