Where should this air hose be connected to?

I've got a 300tdi Defender RHD. I was looking at fitting a snorkel and noticed that from the side vent the air hose goes into a 'Y', one side is connected to anything and the other goes to the air filter.

What should the side that isnt connected to anything be connected to? If it shouldn't be connected to anything can I just replaced that joint with a straight section?

Fitting a snorkel wont be much use with how it is at the moment.

I've attached pictures so you know what I'm talking about

I have the same arrangement on my 300tdi. It's just blanked off. I have no idea what is meant to connect to. Perhaps anything you want? Secondary snorkel? Secondary filter?

If you go through any deep water with that pipe the way it is you will kill your engjne instantly, it should have a water trap fitted or blank. It is meant to have a water trap/drain, looks like yours has dropped off at some point.

The parts manual shows it as just a pipe, I think it has been mentioened before its for getting rid of debris before the air gets to the air filter.

something like this.....

That's the one

If it was open the air would take the easy way and go in through there the rubber NRV shown in the picture allows any water or condensation to drip out when the engine is standing but will be pulled shut when the internal pressure is low due to the engine pulling in air.

No point in putting a snorkle on if you leave that pipe open, you will kill your engine if you suck water up there, dont risk it, it is meant to have a water trap as above post.

Unless there is an internal non return flap in the pipe it requires a duckbill NRV or blanking off. See if you can see or feel inside for a one way flap.

I cant disagree with you there, but I was only saying what the parts manual shows.

I had a feel around mine, around the bit not connected to anything. It seems to be completely blanked off.

Would it be viable to just replace it with a straight section of hose instead of a fork shape?
