ok so saved hard and finally got myself a td5 2001 on a X had a few 300tdi and always wanted td5 i have had her 5 weeks and she needs PAS pump, the manifold is leaking at rear (screaming noise when i pull off) noise on thrush bearing only in morning when reversing off drive, just had a water pump last week
i love this car and want to keep it i know the PAS needs doing but the thrush bearing and the manifold are they important i been told the clutch could still last for years? but could the manifold cause other problems? and can any of this be done by my father who is ok with a spanner unlike me lol

1. If it's the exhaust manifold (you didn't say) this is very common. You'll need a new exhaust manifold gasket plus some new studs as it is well-known that the studs can break off;

2. The THRUST bearing is a component of the clutch assembly and can go noisy. Ideally you would split the bellhousing so that you can fit a new one, but that's often done when the clutch has given up, so you can leave that for the mo';

3. I assume you have rear air suspension as you mention ride height sensors - what makes you think you need to replace them?

hi yes it is the exhaust manifold :) i took it to a man he only works on landrovers he checked all the airbags compressor etc cos over night she is dropping to about 1cm off the wheel arches he said that the height link sensors were split he gave me a price of about £1500 for all the work to be done ( thats the clutch,manifold,pas,height sensors) but i have not got that sort of money so my dad said he would do what he can on the car and i just book it in to get done what he cant
so it IS important i get the manifold done then ?

i was going to have a coil conversion and get rid of the air suspension but my insurance company want to double my insurance so thats out the window:frusty::frusty:

tell ya insurance company that the Td5 can have springs or air, its not really a MOD......its just changing the spec..........or better still find a better insurance company

Hi Sam, just slow up a bit mate, you nearly gave me a heart attack at the thought of £1500 repairs !!!!!!

Let's just take this one at a time:

1. Exhaust manifold - easy job, new gasket about a fiver and a few spare studs and nuts £10 all told plus your dads 1 hour labour;

2. The rear suspension - irrespective of what you have been told, the vast majority of cases of the back-end sitting down are caused by leaky air springs. Replace both at the same time, cost £63.80+vat from Paddocks and take about 30mins per side or less so total cost deliver £155;

3. Ride height sensors - sounds like they might be bûggered but easy and cheap to replace. £20-£30 each plus vat. Total for 2 LR ones inc vat £71. Takes 15mins per side to do.

Why do you need a new pas pump?

So, according to my calcs, it should cost you about £240 plus about 2-3hrs of your dads time to put those things right - how does that sound?????

PS A new pas pump is £128+vat from Paddocks. so your total is now about £380, IF you need a pas pump??????

arrrr that sounds better the airbags on the car are new they were replaced just before i bought it they dunlop if that helps only been on a few months and will the manifold need to be machined as i was told it is bent????

1. Air suspension - if you've got new bags then you'll only need the ride height sensors which saves you £150 !!!!! It is V. important to follow the correct procedure when doing the ride height sensors. It's not at all difficult but there is a sequence which must be followed to get it right first time.

More details will follow once you've bought the parts and are ready to do the job.

2. The exhaust manifold - sometimes these do warp a bit and they sometimes break a retaining stud, so that will need to be replaced. The manifold shouldn't need to be machined (depends how far it has gone - if at all) but some people recommend using an angle grinder to cut slots in the webs of the casting to reduce possible future warpage.

My advice would be get another gasket and some studs and nuts and replace the gasket and see how you get along.

Priority? Needs attention sooner rather than later but the motor won't implode by tomorrow if you don't do it, if you follow me?

Don't take what the garage says on face value - learn about the issues on Disco II so you can make these judgements yourself.

ok cool i going to order the height sensors tomorrow my dad said he will have ago at them i read that if u disconnect the battery before fitting they wont need calibrating???? not sure what any of that means lol
 
fairenough,

ref your pas pump, find it strange its leaking "that bad", usually a hose attatched to it to leak that quick, but without seeing it difficult to say.

They need to be calibrated to read the same heights, but long long long ago I did one before having a diagnostic tool to check the settings after replacement, so I disconnected the battery to do it, and it was fine...sat nice and level etc.

NOTE >>>>> the sensors are easy enough to change, and as stated disconnect the battery before doing anything ( REMEMBER WILL NEED RADIO CODE)
and when doing them, to be safe, support the chassis on axle stands before disconnecting anything.

You don't need to change the radio, just contact an LR dealer and they will be able to get the code for you, assuming it's an orginal-fit LR unit.


Alternatively, e-mail Jaguar-Land Rover HQ and ask them to provide you with your radio and EKA codes. They will ask for proof of ownership.

Check all the paper work that came with the car, there may well be the radio card in that, worst case scenario a Dealer will be able to tell you by the chassis VIN number what the code is, some will do it for free....
 
been through all that its not there and not in cambridge they wont everthing here bloody expensive lol i want a ipod connection anyway so that will be my excuse to buy new one see how a womans mind works we get what we want in the end x
 
you can connect an IPOD to the land rover stereo, so no need to replace it lol.

"if" and when you get your height sensors "if" you want to run it over to me if your dad is not happy doing them, I will gladly do them for you. Will take an hour max and I can re-calibrate them "if" they need it.

If you can contact a dealer to get the code before hand, then that will save you not being with out tunes in the car as well
