Where did this oil come from

Took the Compensator cap of my fuel pump as I was going fit a boost pin and found the cap full of oil on top of the diaphragm. Where has this oil come from? Didn't get any pics of oil in the cap but here is pic of puddle it left on floor.

I would say from the pipe that attaches to the left side of the cap in your second photo, which goes to the boost actuator pipe on the turbo I believe .

Yep what he said. It's oil that's been blown down the pipe from the turbo

Nowt to worry about all vehicles with closed crankcase breather systems have oil in their inlet pipework/intercooler etc, its most likely NOT your turbo at fault, everyone jumps on that bandwagon, what is most likely is your engine is a little tired and suffers a little blowby which in turn allows oil mist to exit via the crankcase cyclone breather and this in turn vents into the air filter pipework BEFORE the turbo, the oily mist then goes through your turbo causing mild panic! and this is where your oil is probably coming from.
I ran my breather to atmosphere to stop this happening.

Dont fit an oil catch tank as they are a pita requiring constant draining down.

I had assumed from the pipe just hoping that it's not an issue with the turbo I'm changing the cyclone breather as don't know last time it was changed/cleaned. Hopefully the engine isn't tired it's only 112,000 but depends how well it was cared for before me

Maybe someone like Lynall can clarify this, but as far as I'm aware the cyclone is a plastic unit that you can clean out by putting some sort of oil solvent in and giving it a shake. I don't think they get a significant build up of crud. @lynall ................?

Yes you can clean them but there really is nowt to clean that will make any difference, but of course the spring/rubber could be knackered and they are only 12 quid from ebay.
I will try and find the pics of the one i cut open.

Just bear in mind the breather goes into the inlet pipework upstream of the turbo.
112k should be fine, one of mine is 138k and one of the last owners er adjusted the speedo, easy to tell if the mileage numbers dont line up perfectly its been diddled!

If you route the breather pipe to atmosphere then the only way oil can get into the inlet pipework is from the turbo if its passing any.
My other tdi has breather routed to atmosphere and the pipework is all bone dry inside and I fitted it 5 yrs ago and that engine has been to the moon and back.

I'll change the cyclone breather just because it's so cheap. When I stripped the Intercooler and pipework off as i was stripping things down to put on new chassis the internals clean and oil free so don't think it will be the turbo(fingers crossed). Once i've got the landy back on road i'll keep an eye on it might route the breather to atmosphere if i find more oil in there.

As for milage i did a vehicle check before i bought it and everything tied in also got lots previous MOT's so milage seems sound.

Thing is with mileage checks they tell you what the mileage is on each mot and Ive always said the smart crook knocks off 10k per year just before the mot that way no one notices!
I bet if you ask a few taxi drivers they may give you an idea?

Yeah I know what you mean. I got it from a old couple who don't seem the type they only used it during winter and for tip runs in 10 years they owned it but who knows before then.
It runs good and pulls well and is actually quiet for a 200Tdi so touch wood engine is fine. Once its all back together(long ways off yet ) and been run for a 1000 miles or so with new breather I'll take the compensator cap back off and if theres oil i will do as you suggest and vent it to atmosphere.
